Dr. Banis' career extended from biological and pharmaceutical research, through process and business development, college teaching, to his current position as Publisher and CEO of Science & Humanities Press in Saint Louis.
His scientific research began as a lab Technician in the Cornell U Swine Division (1962-1968), Research and Teaching Fellow at Purdue U (1967-69), NIH research Trainee at NC State U in Raleigh (1969-73), Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Harvard U (1973-75).
He was employed at Armour Pharmaceutical Company as a Senior Research Scientist in 1975, with increasing responsibilities to Manager of Biochemistry and Pharmaceutical Development in 1983. During his tenure at Armour, he developed expertise in large scale protein purification and earned an MBA (Cum Laude) at night in Marketing and Finance at The University of Chicago (1983).
He then joined the Monsanto Company Health Care Division in Saint Louis, which was subsequently merged with Searle Pharmaceutical. During this time he earned a Certificate in Management Accounting (CMA). Most recently, he served as Director, Operations and Finance for Searle Saint Louis R & D Division until 1994.
His academic employment began in 1987 as an Adjunct Associate Professor of MIS and Management Science in the Evening College at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He also taught statistics at Webster University, Leadership Sociology courses with the military extension program at Vincennes University. and numerous short courses and workshops in accounting and decision science with various organizations such as St. Louis Community College, The Institute of Management Accountants and the St. Louis Institute of CPAs.
In 1994, he became a full-time faculty member at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, teaching various courses detailed at robertbanis.com and retired in 2008 as a Teaching Professor of Logistics and Operations Research. He continued to teach Graduate Operations Management in the Online MBA and Executive MBA program.
In 1995, he developed a short-run book operation, founded Science & Humanities Press which now has five imprints. He edited, published and maintains about 120 titles in print, adding 5-6 titles per year, some of which are used as college textbooks. Dr. Banis' degrees include a Bachelor of Science in Science Education from Cornell University, a Master of Science in Animal Nutrition from Purdue University, a PhD in Biochemistry from North Carolina State University, and a Master of Business Administration in Marketing and Finance (cum laude) from the University of Chicago. He was honored with nominations to Lambda Phi Upsilon Chemistry Honorary and Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honorary.
His memberships have included the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, Institute for Operations Research and Management Sciences, serving as secretary of the gateway chapter, vice president/president-elect, and president, Professional Publisher member of The Independent Book Publishers Association as well as of St. Louis Publishers Association (Vice President, 1999). and the St. Louis chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants (Director for Community Activities and for several years, Director-at-large for Communications, pioneering Zip-plus-4 bulk mail sorting, managing annual directories, newsletters and website).
The recipient of a Volunteer of the Year Award by the Trinity Lutheran Church in 1991 and the United Way Star Communicator Award in 1993, Dr. Banis was always known for his community involvement. Some of his efforts included several years as the co-chairman or chairman of the Searle-St. Louis Division of the United Way Campaign, United Way Allocations Panel for Disabilities Agency Review, volunteer at Saint John's Mercy Medical Center, President of the Burns Recovered Support Group, General Chairman of World Burn Congress VII (1995), and Management Consultant for the United Way Management Assistance Center.
He was born in Manhattan, NYC (1943), married to Lois Elaine Polson in 1970 until her passing in 2002. In 2009, he married Mary Frances Pogue. His blended family includes 4 daughters, three sons-in-law, nine grandchildren and one grand-daughter-in-law. He lives in Saint Charles, Missouri, with his wife, Mary Frances Banis.
