Dieter Bimberg, PhD, Honored by Marquis Who's Who for Professional Excellence in Physics and Electrical Engineering

Dr. Bimberg is celebrating 36 years as a professor at the Technical University of Berlin



In 2015 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Lancaster, UK, and in 2017 the Chinese Academy of Sciences awarded him a distinguished fellowship.

    BERLIN, GERMANY, December 01, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- DDieter Bimberg, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Beginning his career as a student of physics, mathematics and philosophy at the University of Tubingen in Germany, Dr. Bimberg received a BSc in 1964. Continuing his studies at the Goethe University of Frankfurt, he subsequently earned a MSc in 1968, and a PhD in 1971. While studying for his MSc, Dr. Bimberg worked as a teaching assistant at Goethe University between 1967 and 1969. He was promoted to the position of research assistant in 1969, and assistant professor in 1971. In 1972 Dr. Bimberg accepted the position of a senior scientist at the High Magnetic Field Laboratory of the Max-Planck-Society in Grenoble/France, becoming promoted to a principal scientist position in 1975, which he held until 1979. During a leave of absence to the Royal Radar Establishement, Gt. Malvern U.K., in 1974/5 he started work on light conversion phosphors like Ce and filed the very first of his many patents. During another leave of absence to TU Berlin 1976/7 he acquired his second doctor degree, the "Habilitation."

In 1979, Dr. Bimberg relocated to Germany and assumed the position of university professor of electrical engineering at the Walter-Schottky-Institute of the Rheinisch-Westfaelische Technische Hochschule Aachen. In 1981 Dr. Bimberg accepted the position of a chaired university professor of applied physics at the Technical University of Berlin and built-up there a new curriculum of "applied physics" from scratch. From 1990 to 2011 he served as the chairman of the Solid State Physics Department at the Technical University of Berlin and as a member of its senate until 2015. Dr. Bimberg founded the Center of NanoPhotonics at the Technical University of Berlin in 2004, and has worked as its executive director until 2015. Additionally, since 2011, he has been an adjunct distinguished professor of King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah. Throughout his career, Dr. Bimberg has contributed over 1,500 publications, being cited 55000+ times (Hirsch factor 104) to various scientific journals and obtained 30 patents worldwide.

An esteemed physicist, electrical engineer and educator, Dr. Bimberg is affiliated with various organizations, including the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft, IEEE and the American Physical Society, APS. His is Fellow of the American Physical Society, Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and honorary member of the Ioffe Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the American Academies of Engineering and of Inventors, and the European Union Academy of Sciences elected him as Fellow. Dr. Bimberg's accomplishments have garnered him several accolades over the course of his vocational endeavors. In 1989, the Japanese Society of Applied Physics awarded Dr. Bimberg with the Applied Physics Award. Dr. Bimberg was the recipient of the State Prize of the Russian Federation in 2002, as well as the Max-Born Award from the Institute of Physics and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft in 2006 and the Heinrich-Welker-Award 2015. In 2015 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Lancaster, UK, and in 2017 the Chinese Academy of Sciences awarded him a distinguished fellowship.

The son of Herbert M. and Elisabeth K. Bimberg, Dr. Bimberg is married to Dr. Sigrun Bimberg. He has two children, Magnus and Dr. Mathias Bimberg.
