Arthur Thomas Johnson, PhD, PE, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Joining the faculty in 1975 and retiring in 2009, professor emeritus Dr. Johnson taught at the University of Maryland in the Fischell department of bioengineering for 23 years. He taught students from freshman to graduate level, including various courses such as Biological Process Engineering, Basic Electronic Design, and Transport Processes in Biological Systems. Some of his research interests at that time included bioengineering, instrumentation, transport processes, modeling, exercise physiology, and respiratory mechanics. More recently, Dr. Johnson's research was in an effort to continue the development of the Airflow Perturbation Device as a noninvasive measurement of respiratory resistance.

A highly renowned teacher, Dr. Johnson was the recipient of several awards in recognition for his teaching abilities and love for the field, including an Excellence in Teaching Materials Award granted by the biological and agricultural engineering division of the American Society for Engineering Education, a Woody Everett Award by the American Society for Engineering Education, and the Pilkington Outstanding Educator Award. The author of three books, "Biomechanics and Exercise Physiology," "Biological Process Engineering," and "Biology for Engineers," he also authored and co-authored extensively in various professional journals, totaling more than 100 articles on topics such as biomechanics, instrumentation, respiratory masks, and others.

A founding fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering in 1992, Dr. Johnson is a lifetime fellow of the American Society for Engineering Education, the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the American Society for Agricultural and Biological Engineers. Furthermore, he remains a fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, the Biomedical Engineering Society, and Institute for Biological Engineering. He served as co-chairman of the committee to found the American Institute for Medical Biological Engineering, where he later served as executive director, and served as president of the Alliance for Engineering in Medicine and Biology, the Institute for Biological Engineering, and the International Society for Respiratory Protection. He also served as secretary of the Biomedical Engineering Society as well as on the board of directors for the American Society for Agricultural and Biological Engineers.

A certified professional engineer in the state of Maryland, Dr. Johnson received a Bachelor of Arts in Agricultural Engineering, Master of Science in Agricultural Engineering/Electrical Engineering, and a PhD in Agricultural/Electrical Engineering from Cornell University between 1964 and 1969. Immediately following his PhD, he joined the U.S. Army as an officer, where he spent time in Vietnam at the rank of captain. He was later awarded with an Army Commendation Medal and Bronze Star. Happily married and residing in Darlington, MD, Dr. Johnson has been included in the 65th edition of Who's Who in America.
