Recently retired since 2016 from a prolific career in academia, Dr. Cohen is a trained experimental psychologist who was affiliated with New York University (NYU) for more than 40 years. First hired as a teaching assistant in 1977, he continually progressed in his field and earned the opportunity to serve as an adjunct assistant professor, assistant director, and director of the Master's program of Psychology, finally serving as a clinical associate professor of psychology for the last three years of his career.

During his journey in experimental psychology, Dr. Cohen has studied eye movements and muscle tension changes as markers of specific cognitive activity. He also maintains interests in the general effects of mental effort, meditation, and relaxation on various physiological systems, and in theories of emotion. More recently, Dr. Cohen has used fMRI to look at changes in brain activity related to the use of inner speech.
Dr. Cohen has written extensively, contributing chapters to books and authoring and co-authoring articles in professional journals, including the Journal of Mental Imagery, Biological Psychology, and Psychological Methods. Presenting the material in a logically flowing, easy-to-follow way, this comprehensive text covers both introductory and advanced topics in statistics, from the basic concepts and limitations of null hypothesis testing to mixed-design ANOVA and multiple regression.
A longstanding member of the American Psychological Association, the Association for Psychological Science, the Eastern Psychological Association, and the Social and Affective Neuroscience Society, Dr. Cohen currently serves as a consultant for the David Lynch Foundation, an organization founded in 2005 for consciousness-based education and world peace to ensure that every child in the world who wanted to learn to meditate could do so.
