A widely renowned physicist, Dr. Jahan has served as a professor of physics with the University of Memphis (formerly, Memphis State University) for nearly 38 years.

A widely renowned physicist, Dr. Jahan has served as a professor of physics with the University of Memphis (formerly, Memphis State University) for nearly 38 years. He is also an accomplished researcher in the area of free radicals in biomaterials and foods. His doctoral research topic was free radicals and cancer. Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Jahan has outlined his findings in numerous professional journals and book chapters. Additionally, he has appeared in television programs discussing his research. He was also featured in local magazines and newspapers.

Dr. Jahan was initially inspired to pursue a scientific career at a very early age. Although he was encouraged to try chemistry, and he was open to it, he ultimately chose to follow his passions and became a physicist. Dr. Jahan attended Rajshahi University, Bangladesh, where he received a Master of Science in 1964. In 1968, under the auspices of USAID, Dr. Jahan participated at the PSSC Summer Science Program held at the University of Washington, Seattle, and he visited the IIE and other universities and colleges. Before pursuing Ph. D., he served as a lecturer of physics at Sadat College, Tangail; Rajshahi Cadet College; Rajshahi Government College; and Rajshahi University in Bangladesh. As a Fulbright-Hayes Fellow, Dr. Jahan received a PhD at the University of Alabama in 1977. Before joining Memphis State University as an Assistant Professor in 1980, Dr. Jahan spent three years in Sudan where he held the role of lecturer with the University of Khartoum. During his stay in Sudan, Dr. Jahan spent the summer of 1978 as a Visiting Scientist at the Kemmerlingh Onnes Laboratorium, Leiden, the Netherlands.

At the University of Memphis, Dr. Jahan established a biomaterials research laboratory primarily to work with/for the medical device industries and research institutions within and outside the USA. He also served as Site Director of the NSF Industry/University Center for Biosurfaces, in partnership with the State University New York, Buffalo (1989-2011).

Dr. Jahan holds a joint-patent for the detection of surface impurity phases in high temperature superconductors using thermally stimulated luminescence technique. He maintains active involvement with the American Physical Society, American Chemical Society, US Society for Biomaterials, as well as Sigma Xi, where he served local chapter president from 1989 to 1992. Dr Jahan has also served as a consultant with Research Triangle Institute, North Carolina; Schering Plough, Memphis, TN; and Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico.

In recognition of his contributions to the field of physics, Dr. Jahan was selected for inclusion in the second edition of who's who in Science and Engineering, which was published in 1993. He has received numerous awards from the University of Memphis, including Meritorious Faculty Award, Superior Performance in University Research (SPUR) Award, Travel Enrichment Award, Professional Development Assignment Award. In addition, Dr. Jahan was the recipient of the Recognition of Achievement Award from Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1990. He has received research grants from the University of Memphis, NSF, Naval Surface Weapons Maryland Center, US Department of Agriculture, and from medical device industries such as Biomet, Smith and Nephew, Stryker, Zimmer, to name a few.
