After 50 years of surgical and academic experience, Dr. Alfonso retired from the State University of New York (SUNY) Downstate Medical Center in 2017as a distinguished teaching professor and the sixth chairman of the Department of Surgery and College of Medicine. He was the first foreign medical graduate to ever hold a major clinical department chair at the school. Over the years, Dr. Alfonso has also worked as professor and vice chair of his department. Before that, he was an associate professor, director of the head and neck surgery service, and associate director of the division of surgical oncology. At the age of 73, he has recently taken on a new challenge at an emerging medical school on Long Island, NY as a professor of surgery at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra University, as well as director of surgical education and vice chairman of surgery in the Northwell Health System.
An alumnus of Ateneo de Manila University and the University of the Philippines, Dr. Alfonso holds a Bachelor of Arts and an MD. He trained at Temple University Hospital and Memorial Sloan Kettering, and was notably awarded a the Clarence and Mary Dennis Professorial Chair in Surgical Research in 2010 by SUNY, as well the title of distinguished teaching professor. Dr. Alfonso has lent his expertise as department surgery chair to the Long Island College Hospital from 1988 to 2010 and Brooklyn Hospital from 1982 to 1988, and is best known as a pioneer of bloodless surgery in cancer resections among Jehovah's Witness patients at Kings County Hospital. He later established the first bloodless medicine and surgery program in New York at Long Island College Hospital in 1990, and published "The Practice of Cancer Surgery" textbook, as well as over 100 peer reviewed papers and chapters. Dr. Alfonso has mentored over 300 surgical residency graduates, many of whom later became academic leaders and surgical chairs.
Dr. Alfonso was the governor of the American College of Surgeons from 1997 to 2008 and a former president of the New York Surgical Society, the Triboro Directors of Surgery Association, the New York Cancer Society, the New York Head and Neck Society, and the Brooklyn Surgical Society. A contributor to numerous articles in professional journals and chapters in medical books, he has been awarded on countless occasions for his work in the field. In addition to winning the Research Essay Prize through the New York Colon and Rectal Surgical Society, and the Cunningham Mentorship Award from the American College of Surgeons, he has accrued multiple teaching and mentorship recognition awards from universities and medical schools. He has also earned a grant through the American Cancer Society, and been named to publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Alfonso intends to experience the continued growth and success of his career. He is proud of his marriage for the last 48 years to his wife Teresita, with whom they have a daughter, Margaretta, who is an architect and associate partner of Lichten Craig Associates in New York City. His son, Roberto owns and operates a large rehearsal and recording studio in Brooklyn with his wife Vanessa, called "The Sweat Shop."
