Dr. Azzoli currently serves as an assistant in medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center. Earlier in his career, he served as an assistant member at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He has dedicated his career to the conduct of clinical research intended for the benefit of his patients with lung cancer. Dr. Azzoli earned his BA, magna cum laude, from Harvard University in 1991. He was a research scholar at the National Institutes of Health Howard Hughes Medical Institute in 1994. He earned an MD at Johns Hopkins University in 1996. He completed residency training in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital, then fellowship training at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. An expert in the field of lung cancer care, Dr. Azzoli has been recognized numerous times for his leadership in the field, including earning his institution's Housestaff Teaching Award in 2000, and Fellowship Teaching Awards in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2012.
His original work in clinical research has been published in the journals Clinical Cancer Research, Cancer Research, Cancer, the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Chest, the Journal of Thoracic Oncology, the Journal of Oncology Practice, and the Journal of Clinical Oncology. From 2012 to 2013 he served as chairman of the clinical practice guidelines committee for the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and he has served as co-chair and panelist on several major ASCO guidelines in thoracic oncology. He currently serves as editor-in-charge of bi-annual updates for thoracic oncology in the online version of "Cancer: Principles and Practice of Oncology, Ninth Edition."
While providing compassionate care and leadership in his field, Dr. Azzoli has been a participant in and witness to incredible progress in the medical management of patients with lung cancer, mesothelioma, and thymoma. Over the past 15 years he has helped implement targeted drug therapies, and immune checkpoint inhibitor therapies. His current research interests are to study the molecular mechanisms of de novo and acquired resistance to immune checkpoint inhibitor therapy for patients with lung cancer.
