Political science professor Dr. Cuthbertson has dedicated his career to studying and teaching ancient and medieval political theory, modern political theory, Texas politics, American government, American Constitutional law, political art in Houston, TX, and folk art in Texas. First hired in 1963 as an assistant professor at Rice University and one of the founders of the political science department, he became a full professor within the department in 1977, and has been teaching ever since. In addition, he served as a resident associate from 1964 to 2014. Dr. Cuthbertson has been responsible for supervising theses and dissertations of students and serving as a mentor to numerous others.
Highly educated, Dr. Cuthbertson earned a BA, with distinction, in political science in 1959 at the University of Kansas. He then completed a PhD in government and political theory in 1963 at Harvard University. Dr. Cuthbertson has authored several books, including "Myths Power Value," "Political Myth and Epic," and "Political Power." Further, he has co-authored, edited, conducted book reviews, contributed chapters to books, and has authored numerous abstracts and journals articles. Moreover, Dr. Cuthbertson has served as a keynote speaker, conducted various lectures and presentations, and has participated in several invited talks, such as the 2010 "Inlaws and Outlaws in Texas Politics."
Dr. Cuthbertson's journey in academia has led to a 2012 Meritorious Service Award from the Rice University Alumni Association and a 1993 George R. Brown Lifetime Award for Excellence in Teaching. He also earned a Woodrow Wilson Fellow by Harvard University from 1959 to 1963, was a Summerfield Scholar by the University of Kansas from 1955 to 1959, and was a Wilson C. Morris Fellow and Paul Harris Fellow.
A longtime member of the American Political Science Association, the Knife and Fork Club, and the James Baker Society, Dr. Cuthbertson served on the board of directors for the Scottish Heritage Foundation where he was also the recipient of a Great Scott Award. He served on the board of directors of the River Oaks Rotary, where he is an honorary member, and was on the curator's board of the Museum of Printing History.
Highlighted in more than 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in American Politics, and Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Dr. Cuthbertson was born in Warrensburg, MO, and enjoys playing bridge in his down time. He is a life master of the American Contract Bridge League.
