Born in Bethel, KS, Mr. Akins began his career as a farmer in the early 1960s, just after acquiring a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at the University of Missouri. He then spent two years as a service technician for the Northern Ohio Breeders Association before landing his first role with the Holstein Association of America, the world's largest dairy cattle breed organization. Located in Brattleboro, VT, Mr. Akins was employed with the organization for more than 26 years, running the business as chief executive officer between 1978 and 1990 and executive vice president of Holstein-Friesian Services, Inc. during that same time period.
In 1991, Mr. Akins formed Zane Akins and Associates in West Brattleboro, where he served as president. He also worked as the business manager for the Legacy Clinic from 2012 to 2015. Currently, Mr. Akins is serving as president of A&S Associates, Ltd. since 1995, as well as president and chairman of the board of directors for the National Integrated Techs. Inc. since 1996. Additionally, he has been partner of Akins Financial Group since 2005.
Heavily involved in his industry, some of Mr. Akins professional memberships have included serving on the board of directors for the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association, as vice president of the National Society of Livestock Records Association, and as president, secretary, and treasurer for the National Pedigree Livestock Council, where he was also named a lifetime member and received the Distinguished Service Award. He has also been a member of the policy board for the National Cooperative Diary Herd Improvement Program, and also spent time on the board of directors and as president of Earthwide Associates, Inc.. Furthermore, he has served on the board of directors for Vermont National Bank and Earthwide Systems Inc., and as vice president of Earthwide Products Corporation. He was on the Board of Northeast Delta Dental Insurance and was elected its chairman.
When it comes to community involvement, Mr. Akins has worked in various capacities for the Windham County United Way, the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, the Windham Humane Society, and the Brattleboro Area Boys and Girls Club. He also served on the board of directors for the Brattleboro Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, he served as regional vice president, on the board of directors, and as grand president for Alpha Gamma Rho, where he was later recognized with a Man of the Year Award by the Chicago alumni chapter in 1991 and inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2006. A licensed real estate agent, Mr. Akins formerly practiced real estate for five years as well.
During his years in college, Mr. Akins was a Sears & Roebuck Scholar, Freshman Curators Scholar, a Borden's Scholar, a Sophomore Curators Scholar, and a Campus Chest Scholar, all between the years of 1958 and 1960. He was later inducted into the Agriculture Hall of Fame by the University of Missouri Coleman Club in 2008.
Named Man of the Year by Tri-State Breeders Cooperative in 1984, Mr. Akins also received the Citation of Merit by the University Missouri in 1986, a Recognition Award by the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association in 1991, and an honorary lifetime membership with the National Pedigreed Livestock Council. He also was named an Honorary Kentucky Colonel in 2014 and given the Dairy Leadership award by the Missouri Hall of Honors in 2012.
Mr. Akins has previously been cited in dozens of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in the South and Southeast, and Who's Who in the World. He married Kay Ellen Cowan in 1963, with whom he has had three children, Mr. Akins enjoys golfing and biking in his free time.
