Mr. Gardner is an attorney who has dedicated his career of more than 40 years to protecting American consumers from wrongful or harmful practices at the hands of major corporations and other businesses. Highly sought after due to his knowledge and experience, he serves as a legal consultant to private clients nationwide. From 2014 to 2017, he was senior counsel and head of the food law practice for the Stanley Law Group. Prior to that, he was Director of Litigation for the Center for Science in the Public Interest from 2004 to 2014.
Mr. Gardner began his career as a staff attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Central Texas after graduating from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Arts and a JD in 1972 and 1975, respectively. He later served as an assistant attorney general for the states of New York and Texas, and was a visiting assistant professor of law at Southern Methodist University. While maintaining a private practice in Dallas, TX, for 12 years, he served as counsel for the National Consumer Law Center, where he utilized his expertise in the public and private sectors.

He is chair emeritus of the National Association of Consumer Advocates' board of directors, and a former member of the Consumers Union board of directors. In 1980, he was recognized as a Consumer Law Fellow by the National Consumer Law Center.
Since 1989, Mr. Gardner has maintained his certification in civil trial law with the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He has been admitted to practice in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second, Third, Fifth, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, and Eleventh Circuits. In addition, he was the recipient of the Marvin Award from the National Association of Attorneys General in 1988, and was inducted to the Nutrition Action Hall of Fame by the Center for Science in the Public Interest in 1991.
