David Pentland Stewart, JD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    WASHINGTON, DC, December 13, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present David Pentland Stewart, JD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Stewart celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. A professor at Georgetown University Law Center, Mr. Stewart formerly spent six years as a visiting professor at Georgetown beginning in 2008, and 25 years as an adjunct professor of law. Offered a full-time faculty position in 2008, after retiring from the government to direct the Global Law Scholars Program, which prepares students to handle and resolve disputes that involve more than one legal system, Mr. Stewart continues to serve as the director of Georgetown's Center on Transnational Business and the Law.

Retiring from the U.S. Department of State as the assistant legal adviser for private international law, Mr. Stewart's prior assignments included working as assistant legal adviser for diplomatic law and litigation, African affairs, human rights and refugees, law enforcement and intelligence, and international claims and investment disputes. In addition, Mr. Stewart was a special assistant to the Legal Adviser. In 1986, Mr. Stewart was asked to counsel the State Department's human rights portfolio, wherein his responsibilities included work on obtaining Senate advice and consent to ratify the United Nations Convention against Torture. Over the next 20 years, Mr. Stewart helped to negotiate issues including ceasefires in Sudan, women's rights with Hillary Clinton in China, and the United Nations' Convention on Sovereign Immunity. He also spent time in private practice with Donovan, Leisure, Newton & Irvine in commercial and antitrust litigation.

Mr. Stewart first studied at Princeton University, where he completed his undergraduate studies in 1966. He subsequently attended Yale University, where he earned a JD and MA in 1971, and New York University, where he completed an LLM in 1975. He was admitted to practice by the New York State Bar, the Eastern and Southern Districts of the U.S. District Court of New York, the Second Circuit of the U.S. Court of Appeals, and the D.C. Bar.

In addition to teaching at Georgetown University, Mr. Stewart briefly taught at American University, Johns Hopkins University School of International Studies, and University of Virginia School of Law. His expertise includes comparative and foreign law, human rights law, international business and investment, international law, national security, military, and war and peace. He has written numerous articles, which have been published in professional journals, and he served as the co-editor of annual volumes of the Digest of United States Practice in International Law for 16 years. Further, Mr. Stewart was co-author of "Transnational and International Criminal Law" in 2014, "International Human Rights in a Nutshell in 2017, and author of "International Criminal Law in a Nutshell" in 2014.

A longtime member of the American Bar Association, the American Law Institute, the American Society of International Law, the American Branch of the International Law Association, where he served as president-elect and continues to serve as president since 2014, Dr. Stewart served on the InterAmerican Juridical Committee from 2008 to 2016.

Honored for his work at Georgetown, Mr. Stewart received the Charles Fahy Award for Distinguished Adjunct Faculty Teaching for 2003-2004. He has also been named to every edition of Who's Who in America since 2000, as well as a host of editions of Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in American Politics, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World. Married to Jennifer Kilmer with whom he has two children, Mr. Stewart previously served as a major in the U.S. Army.
