Drawing upon nearly 50 years of medical experience, Dr. Ballard serves as a professor of humanities, medicine and pathology with the Penn State College of Medicine. He previously served as the acting chair of the department of humanities. A diplomate of the American Board of Hematology and American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Ballard initially joined the Penn State Hershey Medical Center and Pennsylvania State University in 1976. Since then, he has held a wide range of positions at Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Health, including as professor of humanities, medicine and pathology at the College of Medicine, Lawrence F. & Jane W. Kienle Chair for Humane Medicine, associate professor of medicine and assistant professor of medicine. In addition, Dr. Ballard has served as an attending physician since 1978, and as an associate director of the Hemophilia Center of Central Pennsylvania since 1980.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Ballard has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the East. He was most recently selected as the recipient of the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award from The Arnold P. Gold Foundation, the Dean's Award for Excellence in Teaching, and the Distinguished Educator award from Penn State College of Medicine. A fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Ballard maintains involvement with numerous professional organizations, including the American Society of Hematology, American Osler Society, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, Gold Humanism Honor Society, The Arnold P. Gold Foundation, and the Association of Bioethics and Humanities. Since 2002, he has been honored to be among the Best Doctors in America.
Prior to pursuing a career in medicine, Dr. Ballard received a Bachelor of Arts from West Virginia University. He went on to attend the University of Maryland, where he received an MD in 1969. During the next four years, Dr. Ballard completed his residency in internal medicine with Georgetown University, as well as senior residency in medicine with The University of Vermont Medical Center and fellowship in hematology with Georgetown University. From 1973 to 1975, he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, with rank of major. Upon completing military service, Dr. Ballard served as a research fellow in hematology at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.
Since the beginning of his career, Dr. Ballard has contributed numerous articles to professional journals pertaining to his areas of expertise. In addition, he has been credited as a chapter contributor to "Medical Consultation" and co-editor of "Time to Go." Dr. Ballard is recognized as a former member of the board of directors with the local region of the American National Red Cross. He is also a former chairman of the committee for undergraduate medical education and former co-director of the special hematology laboratory with Penn State Health, as well as a former director of third year clerkship with the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at Penn State Health.
