Howard Bruce Waitzkin, MD, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Waitzkin is a distinguished professor emeritus in the department of sociology at the University of New Mexico and adjunct professor of internal medicine at the University of Illinois.

A distinguished professor emeritus in the department of sociology at the University of New Mexico and adjunct professor of internal medicine at the University of Illinois, Dr. Waitzkin is a sociologist and primary care practitioner of internal medicine and geriatric medicine and teacher who is highly educated in his field of expertise. Upon receiving his undergraduate degree at Harvard University, summa cum laude, he went on to complete a Master's degree, PhD, and MD at the prestigious university between 1966 and 1972. He then obtained training as a resident and fellow at Stanford University and Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Waitzkin continues to practice medicine as a primary care physician with the Community Health Partnership of Illinois in Harvard, IL, not far from his home. Some of Dr. Waitzkin's primary focuses of study over the years have included health policy in comparative international perspective and psychosocial issues in primary care. He has participated in advocacy for improved health access and has conducted studies of Medicaid managed care in New Mexico, the diffusion of managed care to Latin America, and global trade and public health, supported by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the World Health Organization, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the United Nations. His work on patient-doctor communication and psychosocial issues in primary care has been funded by the National Institute on Aging, the National Institute of Mental Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

During Dr. Waitzkin's years at the University of New Mexico, he taught courses on medical sociology, political economy of health, globalization and health, health communication, public mental health, comparative international health systems, social medicine in Latin America, and the first seminar in the new BA-MD program called 'Contours of Health in New Mexico.' He previously taught at the University of Vermont, beginning in 1975, as well as the University of California at Berkeley, San Francisco, and Irvine. Since 2014, he has been an adjunct professor in the school of public health at the University of Puerto Rico. He also held numerous visiting professor appointments throughout his tenure in academia both nationally and internationally, including at the University of Guadalajara, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in Greece, and Cornell University Medical College.

Between 1991 and 2011, Dr. Waitzkin spent 20 years as a principal investigator for the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the National Institute of Mental Health. He was a consultant for a documentary, "Health Care Across the Border," for National Public TV in New York City from 1989 to 1990, and served as an expert on the Panel on Communications with Elderly Patients as part of the National Institute on Aging in 1997. Furthermore, he has been an affiliate dating back to 1991 for numerous organizations like the Research and Training Group in Social Medicine in Santiago, Chile, the PeƱasco Rural Health Clinic in New Mexico, and the FHN Regional Health Network and Community Health Partnership in Illinois.

Dr. Waitzkin has also written extensively in his field, including the 2011 book "Medicine and Public Health at the End of Empire" and the 2004 book "At the Front Lines of Medicine: How the Health Care System Alienates Doctors and Mistreats Patients...and What We Can Do About It." The author of five books in total, he has also contributed chapters to books and has authored and co-authored approximately 200 articles, including a proposal for a single-payer national health program that was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, which was later introduced in the U.S. Congress. He has also served on the editorial boards for various academic journals.

A diplomate in Internal Medicine of the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Waitzkin has been a fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology, the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Physician and Patient, the American Public Health Association, and the Society of General Internal Medicine. He is a former fellow and New Century Scholar of the U.S. Fulbright Program, fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities, senior fellow of the National Institute on Aging, and fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He was a section chairman for the American Sociological Association from 2009 to 2010 and most recently, he has been serving as president of the Salvador Allende Program of Social Medicine since 2006.

Dr. Waitzkin has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the Leo G. Reeder Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Medical Sociology, the Eliot Freidson Award for Outstanding Publication in the medical sociology section of the American Sociological Association, and the Jonathan Mann Award for Lifetime Commitment to Public Health and Social Justice Issues from the New Mexico Public Health Association. He has also been highlighted in dozens of editions of Who's Who since 1992, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in the World. Married to Mira Lee since 2012, he has one child from a previous marriage and one step-child.
