Emeritus professor of finance in the college of business at The Ohio State University (OSU), Dr. Buser's career at the university spanned 27 years. First hired as an assistant professor of finance, he was promoted to full professor by 1986, while also serving as coordinator of the student investment program from 1988 to 2002, and associate dean for the Fisher College of Business from 1995 to 2002. Covering topics including banking, stimulus, and the economy, Dr. Buser taught stock market, investments, and corporate finance courses to undergraduate, Master's, and PhD level students. His areas of expertise included interest rates, valuation analysis, equities and fixed income securities, and cyclical cash flows. During his tenure, he also co-coordinated the Student Investment Management (SIM) program, which gave MBA-level students an opportunity to make investment decisions for the university. Under his leadership, the SIM class managed more than $15 million of the university's portfolio and consistently outperformed the S&P 500 during a near 10-year period.
Prior to joining the OSU faculty, Dr. Buser was an assistant professor of economics at Southern Illinois University from 1972 to 1975, and was also a financial economist for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. A visiting associate professor of finance at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business from 1983 to 1984, he recently served as a visiting professor of finance in the fall of 2015 and the fall of 2016. He was also a visiting professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1997 and 2004.
Dr. Buser's research in the field led to him to author many articles that were published in leading academic journals, including the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, the Quarterly Journal of Finance, the Annual review of Financial Economics, the Journal of Portfolio Management, and the Open Journal of Economics and Finance. Dr. Buser served as a co-editor for the Journal of Finance from 1988 to 1995, and he served as associate editor for a variety of journals, including the Journal of Housing Research and the Journal of the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association. In addition, Dr. Buser was a manuscript referee for the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Finance Economics, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, the Journal of Business, Financial Management, the Housing finance Review, the Financial Review, the Journal of Financial Research, Management Science, the Journal of Economics and Business, the Journal of Macroeconomics, the Journal of Business, and the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking.
A longtime member of the American Finance Association, former board of directors for the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio, and former historian for the American Finance Association, Dr. Buser was chosen to serve on the presidential transition team for the Obama-Biden Administration in 2008. He holds a BA in Economics from the prestigious Princeton University and a PhD in Economics from Boston College.
