He was previously named the recipient of the Maurice A. Biot Medal by the American Society of Civil Engineers in recognition of his work in poroelasticity. As a senior scientist with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Dr. Berryman applies his skills to geophysical problems in oil and gas using seismic exploration and exploitations tools, induced seismicity for geothermal studies, and understanding mechanical and fluid flow properties of granular and fractured media. With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Berryman holds numerous patents for Time-Reversal Acoustics for Multiple Targets.
A respected authority in physics, geophysics and applied mathematics, Dr. Berryman has contributed more than 150 articles to professional journals pertaining to scientific research and innovation. In addition, he has held visiting, consulting and sabbatical appointments at various universities and related institutions. He previously served as an associate editor with the Journal of Mathematical Physics and IEEE Transactions on Geoscience.
Since 2004, Dr. Berryman has been recognized as a fellow with the Institute of Physics. He stays active and engaged in his fields of study through his involvement with the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, American Geophysical Union, Acoustical Society of America and American Physical Society. Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Berryman has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including the 1st edition of Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
Prior to pursuing a career in scientific research, Dr. Berryman received a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Kansas in 1969. He went on to attend the University of Wisconsin, where he completed a Master of Science in Physics in 1970, as well as a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics in 1975. Dr. Berryman completed a postdoctoral appointment at the university before joining Continental Oil Co. (CONOCO) as a research geophysicist in 1976. He later served as a national science foundation fellow with the Courant Institute, member of the technical staff with AT&T Bell Telephone Laboratories and physicist with the Lawrence Livermore National Lab. In 2006, Dr. Berryman joined the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab as a geological senior scientist. Dr. Berryman is married to Marcia Ann Griffin Berryman.
