Malcolm J. Low, MD, PhD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Low has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the fields of medicine and higher education

ANN ARBOR, MI, December 15, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Malcolm J. Low, MD, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Low celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Professor of molecular and integrative physiology and internal medicine since 2009, and David F. Bohr Collegiate professor of physiology since 2015 at the University of Michigan (UM), Dr. Low first joined the faculty in 2009. He has also been serving as the director of the animal phenotyping core laboratory since 2010, supported by two National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants. An internationally recognized expert in the generation and analysis of mutant mouse models, Dr. Low currently uses a combination of molecular, genetic, endocrine, and behavioral approaches to characterize the physiological functions of neuropeptides and G-protein coupled receptors that are highly expressed in hypothalamic neural circuits; particularly, proopiomelanocortin (POMC), MC4-receptor, enkephalin, dynorphin, mu-opioid receptor, corticotropin releasing hormone, somatostatin, dopamine, and dopamine D2-like receptors. POMC neurons play a critical role in the regulation of appetite and metabolism, and dysfunction in their associated neural circuits can produce morbid obesity.

Dr. Low has authored numerous articles in his field and continues to serve as director of the NIH-funded Michigan Mouse Metabolic Phenotyping Center since 2016, and as director of the Systems and Integrative Biology Training Grant since 2013. He is a former member of the endocrinology and IPOD study section for the Center of Scientific Review for the NIH in Bethesda, MD, and associate editor of Gastroenterology from 2001 to 2016.

After earning a BS at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and MD at Albany Medical College, Dr. Low completed a residency in internal medicine at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, fellowship in endocrinology at the New England Medical Center, and PhD in Neuroscience at Tufts University in Boston, becoming board certified in internal medicine in 1982, and in endocrinology and metabolism in 1985. First hired at Tufts University as an assistant professor of medicine in 1986, he then spent nearly 20 years at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland from 1990 to 2009, where he taught biochemistry, molecular biology, and behavioral neuroscience, worked as a scientist and senior scientist on campus, and served as co-director of the Center for the Study of Weight Regulation.

Early in his career, Dr. Low was named to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He later earned a Pfizer Scholars Award for New Faculty by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in 1988, a University of Medical School League of Research Excellence Award in 2011, and a Rackham Graduate Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award in 2016, as well as several ongoing grants, a Physician-Scientist Award, and an Individual National Research Service Award by the NIH.

Elected to the Association of American Physicians and as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2011, Dr. Low is also a member of the Society of Neuroscience and the Endocrine Society. Included in numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, and Who's Who in the Midwest, Dr. Low holds six U.S. patents. Married to Gaye Thomas since 1981, he is the father of two sons.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Malcolm Low, MD, PhD, has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
