Owner of Ritter Engineering in Elkton, MD, for the past 28 years, and professor emeritus of bioresources and civil and environmental engineering at the University of Delaware since 2014, Dr. Ritter played a tremendous role on campus during his over 40 year career at the university. Specializing in the areas of groundwater pollution, waste management, water quality modeling, surface water contamination, and irrigation management, he was first hired in 1971 as an assistant professor and later chaired the department on two separate occasions. While working toward his MS and PhD requirements, Dr. Ritter spent five years as a research associate at Iowa State University, where his work involved research in soil and water conservation and nonpoint source pollution.
In the field, Dr. Ritter was a senior engineer with Environmental Consultant International in Rehoboth Beach, DE, and project manager for Wik Associates, Inc., in New Castle, DE. He also worked for R.V. Anderson and Associates, doing surveying work in different areas of municipal engineering, spending time with the Ontario Department of Agriculture in Canada and Arnolds Dairy Farm in Ontario, Canada, and prior to 1963, working on a 150-acre beef and hog farm at Shady Rest Farms.
Born in Ontario, Canada, Dr. Ritter completed a BSA in Agricultural Engineering at the University of Guelph and a BAS in Civil Engineering at the University of Toronto. After relocating to the United States in 1966, he earned an MS in Water Resources and a PhD in Sanitary and Agricultural Engineering at Iowa State University.
Dr. Ritter's extensive research in engineering led to his contribution of more than 300 articles as author and co-author. He was an editor for "Irrigation and Drainage Conference Proceedings" and, since 2001, editor of the "Journal of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering." A fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Dr. Ritter received numerous awards, including a News Correspondence Award in 1987, Outstanding Service Award in 1993, Service to Division Award in 1997, Civil Engineer of the Year Award in 1999, and Royce J. Tipton Award in 2004. Dr. Ritter is also an elected fellow of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers where he also received several awards, is a lifetime member of the American Water Works Association and the Water Environment Federation, and diplomate of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers. Most recently, Dr. Ritter received the Richard Torrence Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers in 2010. He has been highlighted in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, and Who's Who in Science and Engineering. Since 1966, Dr. Ritter has been married to Carol-Anne Gertrude Turner, with whom he has two children.
