Teaching in the department of education at Suffolk County Community College for more than 45 years, Ms. Herley is a longtime adjunct professor who was first hired in 1972. During her many years in academia, she has taught as an elementary school teacher for South Haven School District in New York from 1972 to 1989, and for South County School District in East Patchogue, NY, from 1989 to 2002. She also taught as a lecturer of art and professor of education at Grahamstown Training College in South Africa in the late 1950s and as a high school art teacher at Woodbury Down Comprehensive in London, England, in the early 1960s.
Today, Ms. Herley teaches two courses at Suffolk County Community College: EDU 211 Early Childhood Seminar and Practicum I and EDU 221 Early Childhood Seminar and Practicum II. Throughout her journey in education, Ms. Herley has led many workshops and chaired the educational problems committee for Bellport Teachers Association in East Patchogue, NY. She is a member and former president of the Suffolk County Association for the Education of Young Children, member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and has been an attendee of the Oxford Round Table several times.
As an artist, Ms. Herley has hosted exhibitions in Brookhaven, Smithtown, and East Hampton, NY, for more than 40 years. The author of "Art through Your Child's Eyes" in 1975, she is active with the South Bay Art Association, where she was the recipient of a Best in Show for 2015 and 2017, the East End Arts Council, and the Smithtown Arts Council. She is also a member of the Movable Book Society and serves as president of her local golf league.
Earning an undergraduate degree at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa, in 1956, and an education diploma at the university the following year, Ms. Herley then completed a Bachelor of Education with distinction in 1959. Arriving in the U.S. in 1965, she later completed a Master's degree at Adelphia University in 1975. She is a certified elementary education and art education teacher in the state of New York.
Ms. Herley has received much acclaim for her teaching career. Honored with a Certificate of Special Recognition by the South County School District three times, she received a Recognition Award by the Bellport Teaches Association every year from 1990 to 1993, and has been cited in multiple editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women. Formerly married to Patrick James Herley, Ms. Herley enjoys spending her free time playing golf, collecting antiques, and working in her garden.
