Dr. Li received a 2017 AGRO Award for Innovation in the Chemistry of Agriculture from the American Chemical Society
HONOLULU, HI, December 18, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Qing X. Li, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
With the international challenges of a changing climate, biochemists like Dr. Li are vital to understanding and managing the bread baskets of the world. After 28 years in the field, Dr. Li has established himself as a professor and agriculture and chemistry expert with the department of molecular biosciences and bioengineering at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. He believes his success is due to his passion for the fields and the students who give him a fresh outlook on the field, and encourages the next generation of undergraduates, PhD students, and postdoctoral fellows to pursue biochemistry.
Dr. Li initially studied agriculture at the Shan Dong Agriculture University in Tai'an, in the Shan Dong province in the Eastern region of China. It is one of the oldest settled provinces in the country, with a blend of metropolitan and important agricultural regions. Dr. Li's particular expertise was in plant protection from pesticides and disease, which are important considerations when agriculture and industry overlap. He went on to doctoral studies with the University of California, Davis, and earned a doctorate in 1990 in agriculture and environmental chemistry. Dr. Li has become well regarded in the fields of proteomics, environmental biochemistry, and biotechnology, as well as with the international scientific community.
His research is centered on agrochemicals with emphasis on functional proteomics, phytopharmaceuticals, food safety, pesticide chemistry and environmental fate of agrochemicals. As of how, his research has resulted in over 300 peer-reviewed scientific publications. His current H-index by google scholar is 41 and his current i10-index is 157. His research has resulted in 76 publications of immunoassays for 42 different agrochemicals. He and his colleagues discovered pi-cation interactions (not to be confused with cation-pi interactions) between antibody and the target molecule as mechanisms of molecular recognition. He has published more than 50 papers in bioremediation and reported more than 10 new bacterial species. His bioremediation research focuses on catabolic mechanisms of persistent pollutants. His research in proteomics focuses on palm peroxidase and glycoproteomics. He and his colleagues discovered that some monoterpenoids are selective insecticides to agricultural, storage, and household insect pests. Recently, he and his colleagues discovered C-glycosylflavones for Alzheimer's disease treatment and elucidated the novel mechanism of action being selective modulation of glycogen synthase kinase-3b via an ATP noncompetitive inhibition.
He has routinely taught an upper undergraduate course "Environmental Biochemistry" and a graduate laboratory course "Advanced Laboratory Techniques". He has mentored 18 MS students, 20 PhD students, 27 post-doctoral fellows and 20 researchers. He has hosted 32 visiting professors and scholars for research.
For his invaluable contributions to the biochemistry field, Dr. Li has received a 2017 AGRO Award for Innovation in the Chemistry of Agriculture from the American Chemical Society, where he has been a longstanding member. At only 60 years old, Dr. Li considers this the middle of his career, and continues to contribute to the growing body of biochemical research. In his free time, he enjoys barbecues and hiking. He often makes visits back to the People's Republic of China, as well as Japan and the Republic Korea.
