A former professor who spent 31 years inside the classroom, Dr. Sakabe is a research scientist who has been serving as chief researcher for the Foundation of Advancement International Science in Tsukuba, Japan, since 1997. Dr. Sakabe first taught as a professor, research assistant, and associate professor in the department of chemistry, faculty of science, at Nagoya University from 1966 to 1985. He is currently working on a joint project with Hamamatsu Photonics Co. Ltd. on a U-shape rotating anti-cathode compact x-ray generator.
Dr. Sakabe was previously offered the opportunity to teach as a professor in the photon factory at the National Laboratory of High Energy Physics, where he remained for nine years. In 1994, he began teaching as a professor at the University of Tsukuba until 1997, when he transitioned into the field as a chief researcher. Dr. Sakabe transitioned into the Tsukuba Advanced Research Alliance (TARA), and helped to establish the Structure Biology Sakabe Project (SBSP) involving 14 pharmaceutical companies. The SBSP group published a four-monthly scientific magazine, Structure Biology, and provided funding for a scientific station. The University of Tsukuba was led at the time by Nobel laureate Dr. Leo Esaki, who won the prize in physics in 1973, and Dr. Sakabe also worked with Nobel Laureate D. C. Hodgkin, who won the prize in chemistry in 1964, as a member of her group on the study of insulin.
SBSP later transferred from TARA to the Public Interest Incorporated Foundation for Advancement of International Science, ultimately leading to an initial consortium of 34 companies and 36 universities that formed the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). Dr. Sakabe was a member of the diffraction structural biology committee of JSPS, which led to the establishment of the 169th Committee on Structural Biology Using Diffraction Techniques of the University-Industry Cooperative Research Committee of JSPS, where he also served as chairman from 2000 to 2015. He held the International Symposium on Diffraction Structural Biology for the group four times, in Tokyo and Nagoya in Japan as well as Paris in 2013. A succeeding chairman brought the symposium to Tennessee in 2016.
Active as a member of The Biophysical Society of Japan and the Crystallographic Society of Japan, where he received a 1st Nishikawa Award in 2001, Dr. Sakabe is also a member of both the Biophysics Society of Japan and the Chemical Society of Japan. Dr. Sakabe authored dozens of articles in professional journals throughout his career, including the Journal of Biosciences, the Journal of Biochemistry, and Agricultural and Biological Chemistry. He has also been the recipient of The Shimazu Award in 2005, granted by the Ibaraki Foundation of Advancement of Science and Technology, as well as the 5th Tsukuba Award in 1994.
Earning a PhD at Nagoya University in 1966, Dr. Sakabe is married to wife Kiwako Sasaki and enjoys gardening in his free time. He was also named to the 33rd edition of Who's Who in the World in 2016.
