Throughout his career, Mr. Marx has worked with educators, business people, and various other community and government leaders across North America, including all 50 of the United States, and across six continents and 81 countries. He has been lauded as a deep generalist and intellectual entrepreneur who is always pursuing ideas.
Beginning his broadcasting career in radio, Mr. Marx was a newscaster, announcer, and director for KSOO Radio and Television in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He then moved on to WOW Radio and Television in Omaha, Nebraska, where he served on the air for a decade. From 1971 to 1979, Mr. Marx became communication executive for the Westside Community Schools in Omaha and the Jefferson County Public Schools in the Denver area. In 1979, he began his work as a senior executive for the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) in the Washington, D.C., area, a position he held for close to 20 years, including service as executive director of AASA's Leadership for Learning Foundation. After forming CPO in 1998, he returned to Jefferson County to advise on strategy in the wake of the Columbine High School Tragedy.
Mr. Marx' extensive background has enabled him to interpret issues related to education and society by working with local, national, and international news media, drawing from his broad and deep industry experience. He has appeared as a guest on many television stations and networks. Thanks to his leadership in media education he has been able to serve as a founder and member of several groups that have advised producers and networks on children's television and other educational programming. Some of the notable institutions that have benefited from Mr. Marx' counsel include the PBS Educational Advisory Board, NBC's "The More You Know" Advisory Board, and the Emmy Awards Selection Committee. He also served on a Washington Post Project 2025 Panel.
The author of numerous books that date back to 1976 with the publication of "Radio...Your Publics Are Listening" and more recent books such as "Twenty-One Trends for the 21st Century" and "Future-Focused Leadership," Mr. Marx has also served as co-author of several books and has written innumerable articles for a variety of publications. Mr. Marx was recognized for his tireless efforts with a Distinguished Service Award from the American Association of School Administrators and the Presidents Award from the National School Public Relations Association. He was recipient of the Outstanding Friend of the Horace Mann League Award in 2016.
For nearly 20 years, Mr. Marx served on the Selection Committee for the National Teacher of the Year Award and was a founder of the National Superintendent of the Year Awards Program. Professionally, he has served in a number of capacities for various organizations such as the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA), the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), the World Future Society, the World Affairs Council, and the Center for Civic Education. He has been recognized for his extremely active leadership at the local level. For example, he spent time as a mayoral appointed member of the Omaha Parks and Recreation Board and the Omaha Urban Growth Policy Advisory Council. Mr. Marx was a founder and first president of the Keystone Community Task Force, a neighborhood improvement organization founded in 1969 and celebrating its 50th anniversary of continuing accomplishments in 2019. Mr. Marx has served as a member of several organizations in his home state of South Dakota, including the Boards of the Laura Ingalls Wilder Memorial Society and the Harvey Dunn Society.
