Attorney Mr. Wheeler began his legal career as an associate with Hodges, Doughty & Carson, PLLC, in Knoxville, TN, in 1968. Making partner just four years later, he remained in his role for 33 years until 2005, when he transitioned into an of counsel for the firm. His extensive resume in the legal profession includes work in the areas of commercial and civil litigation, tort law, workers' compensation, insurance defense, mediation, and class action defense. An approved mediator under Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 31 and in the U.S. District Court, Mr. Wheeler was admitted to practice by all the courts of Tennessee and in the United States District Courts for the Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of Tennessee, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, and, in 1974, the Supreme Court of the United States.

Mr. Wheeler graduated from the University of Tennessee with a BS in Journalism in 1960, and received a commission in the U.S. Army, in which he served on active duty as a military intelligence officer from 1961 to 1963. After working as a newspaper editor, he returned to the University of Tennessee to complete a JD in 1968. While pursuing his juris doctorate, Mr. Wheeler served as a member of the board of editors for the Tennessee Law Review and worked as an administrative assistant to the director of the UT/AEC Agricultural Research Laboratory in Oak Ridge, TN. He was then hired by his firm, Hodges, Doughty & Carson, PLLC, upon graduation, a diversified general practice and civil law firm that has been serving a wide range of clients, including Tennessee residents and out-of-state clients, for more than 85 years.

A lifetime fellow of the Tennessee Bar Foundation and the American Bar Foundation, in which he served as Tennessee Fellows' Chair, and lifetime member of the U.S. Sixth Circuit Judicial Conference, Mr. Wheeler was founding chairman of the Historical Society of the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Tennessee, and a founding member of the executive committee of the Tennessee Supreme Court Historical Society. He is also a longtime member of the Tennessee Bar Association where he served as president and board of governors for several years, and the American Bar Association where he served on the House of Delegates from 1986 to 2000.

Furthermore, Mr. Wheeler served as a member of the Tennessee Appellate Court Study Commission, was chair of merit selection panels in the appointment of two U.S. magistrate judges and the reappointment of a third magistrate judge, and was a member of merit selection panels in the appointment of two U.S. bankruptcy judges throughout his career.

Mr. Wheeler has been included in dozens of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, and Who's Who in Finance and Business since 1990. He has also been listed in The Best Lawyers in America and Mid-South Super Lawyers more than 10 times.
