With over 55 years of professional experience, Mr. Monte currently works as the president and chairman of Kenrich Petrochemicals, Inc. and owns the company with his wife Erika G. Monte, daughter of the company founders Oscar A. Spiegelhalder and Eric A. Spiegelhalder. Prior to these positions, he had served the New Jersey-based company as vice president from 1966 to 1969, and as executive vice president from 1969 to 1979. In 2015, the company moved its operations to plants in Decatur and Dayton, TN. Mr. Monte had previously held the positions of assistant superintendent for Turner Construction Company from 1961 to 1964, and as project manager for Blaize Construction Company in Eastchester, NY, from 1964 to 1966.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, on September 18, 1939, to Michael Salvatore and Antoinette Monte, Mr. Monte began his career at Manhattan College, where he received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1961. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Monte became a licensed professional engineer in the states of New Jersey and New York. Eight years later, Mr. Monte earned a BS Chemical Engineering equivalence to qualify for a subsequent Master of Science in Polymeric Materials at NYU Tandon School of Engineering - 1969.
Throughout his career, Mr. Monte has remained affiliated with various organizations within his professional circles. He is most prominently involved with the Society of Plastics Engineers, with whom he is a Fellow and Most Honored Service Member and founded the SPE FOAMS Conference in 1999 with venues in the USA, Spain, Japan, and Germany serving as co-chairman in 2000, 2002, 2009, 2011 and 2014. He served as past president of the SPE Palisades-New Jersey section in 2009, past chairman of the SPE thermoplastic materials and foams division from 1997 to 2000 and was recently designated a lifetime member of the BOD. Furthermore, Mr. Monte has previously held several other roles for the respected society, including finance committee member, technical advisory board member, ANTEC Operations in 2007, and proxy councilors for Israel, Italy, and Belgium. In 2011, he and his wife Erika were inducted into the PPA (Plastic Pioneers Association) whose membership is limited to 250 members worldwide. In 2015, he was voted to the PPA Board of Governors and serves currently as Newsletter Chair of their publication, "The Most Travelled Sheet".
In addition to the Society of Plastic Engineers, Mr. Monte has maintained membership with a number of respected institutions, including the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Society for the Advanced Material Process Engineers, the American Chemical Society (ACS), the ACS Rubber Division, the Society of Petroleum Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Canadian Plastics Industries Association, and the American Composites Manufacturers Association. Mr. Monte has additionally served as past chairman of the ACS New York Rubber Group, former trustee of the Walter Head Foundation of Rotary District 7490, and as a lifetime member of the National Defense Industrial Association.
Beyond his status as an esteemed and long-standing figure within his industry, Mr. Monte has received several notable accolades in recognition of his impressive endeavors. Recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International, he was previously honored as Businessman of the Year by the Bayonne Chamber of Commerce in 2015. Additionally, he received the C. Homer Flynn Award for Technical Excellence by the Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology. Currently, he serves on the Plastics Industry Association's Recycle Sub-Committee on Polymer Compatibilization.
The owner of 31 US patents issued in the United States and worldwide, Mr. Monte has contributed articles and technical papers to professional journals, as well as various chapters to books and has over 450 ACS CAS Abstracts of "Works by S.J. Monte". He has also penned the 340-page "Ken-React Reference Manual on Titanates, Zirconates and Aluminates" for Kenrich Petrochemicals, Inc. with 80,000 copies distributed. His invention of specialty chemical products are referenced in several thousand patents by other investigators and are used in products such as digital copier toner, cosmetics, advanced composites, electronics, OLED's for brighter video screens, Portland cement, etc. Mr. Monte has been an invited lecturer at various universities and professional societies in Milan, Osaka, Tokyo, Berlin, Dusseldorf, Paris, Manchester, Birmingham, Mumbai, Istanbul, Hong Kong, Sidney, Seoul, Toronto, Mexico City, Bogata, etc, - in all, over 52 countries.
