With more than 35 years of experience in civil, structural, and materials engineering, Dr. Norville has worked at Texas Tech University in a variety of roles. He began as an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering in 1981, becoming a Professor of Civil Engineering in 1990. From 2004 through 2014, he served as Department Chair after which he returned to his duties as a Professor. His area of expertise is window glass and he is known for his work in writing test standards and design methodologies that address load resistance (strength), hurricane-resistant glazing, and blast-resistant glazing for glass in buildings.
Dr. Norville served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Upon his return he followed his father into civil engineering, obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Toledo in 1974. He went on to Purdue University, earning a Master of Science in Civil and Structural Engineering in 1976, and a Ph.D. in Structural Reliability in 1981. He is recognized as a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers, a Fellow of ASTM, and a Fellow of the Facade Tectonics Institute. He continues active involvement with ASTM as vice chairman of the committee on building security and chairman of several task groups.
Throughout his career he has been continually recognized for his contributions to the field of civil engineering. He was named to two fellowships in 2016 (ASTM and Facade Tectonics Institute). In 2014, he received the Award of Merit from ASTM. Previously, he received the President's Excellence in Teaching Award from Texas Tech University preceded by several research and teaching awards from both Texas Tech and Purdue. He is an active contributor to numerous publications relating to his areas of expertise, most notably the American Society of Civil Engineers Journal of Architectural Engineering. His papers that are most often cited include "The Strength of Weathered Window Glass" in the Bulletin of the American Ceramic Society and "Full Scale Tests of Heat Strengthened Glass with Ceramic Frit," published by Glass Structures and Engineering, an international journal.
