With nearly 55 years of experience, Dr. Ito has been a medical officer, senior investigator, and pathologist with the National Institutes of Health's Laboratory of Bioseparation Technology since 1978. Prior to that, he was a visiting scientist with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute from 1968 to 1978, and an instructor of physiology at the Osaka City University School of Medicine from 1963 to 1968. His research interests include separation science, the development of countercurrent chromatography, and cell separation methods. He holds 50 patents, including for a coil planet centrifuge, a rotating-seal-free flow-through centrifuge, and centrifugal precipitation chromatography. Dr. Ito has contributed over 600 scientific articles to professional journals.
Dr. Ito began his career at Osaka City University in Japan, obtaining an MD in 1958. He interned at the United States Naval Hospital in Yokosuka, Japan from 1958 to 1959 before relocating to the United States for a residency in pathology at the Cleveland Metropolitan General Hospital (now MetroHealth System) from 1959 to 1961, and a residency in pathology at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, IL from 1961 to 1963.
Throughout his career, Dr. Ito has been recognized numerous times for his contributions. He has earned two Technology Excellence Awards, and he has previously won 1st Place in Annual Science Research. While pursuing his education, he was the recipient of a WHO Research Travel Grant, and a Fulbright Exchange Scholarship. He has also been named to professional publications such as Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World.
