A respected voice in the field of mathematics, Dr. Markus is a recognized regents' professor emeritus with the University of Minnesota. Prior to pursuing a career in education, Dr. Markus received a Bachelor of Science from the University of Chicago in 1942. He went on to complete a Master of Science with the university while serving as a lieutenant, junior grade, with the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1944 to 1946. Upon completing a PhD through Harvard University in 1951, Dr. Markus joined the university as an instructor of mathematics. He briefly served as an instructor with Yale University and lecturer with Princeton University before accepting a role as an assistant professor with the University of Minnesota in 1957. Over the subsequent 30 years, Dr. Markus rose through the ranks as an associate professor, professor of mathematics, associate chairman, director of control science and dynamical systems center, and regents' professor of mathematics. Since 1993, he has been recognized as a regents' professor emeritus with the University of Minnesota.
Although Dr. Markus is now retired, he continues to be recognized as a former member of the speaker's committee with the International Mathematical Union, as well as an honorary fellow with the Royal Society of Edinburg. He maintains involvement with the American Mathematical Society and American Geophysical Society. Dr. Markus has served as a national lecturer through his ongoing involvement with the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Outside of his academic appointments, Dr. Markus holds an interest in history. He is credited with collecting military recordings and documents in an effort to establish a permanent World War II collection. His own experiences as a lieutenant during World War II have been prepared for the Library of Congress.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Markus has contributed dozens of articles to journals pertaining to his areas of expertise. Dr. Markus most recently authored, "Complex Symplectic Spaces and Boundary Value Problems," published by the American Mathematical Society in 2006. In recognition of his contributions to the field of mathematics, he has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in the Midwest, and Who's Who in the World.
