With 55 years of industry experience, Dr. Blum has worked as a professor in the University of Louisville Department of History since 2000, having been an associate professor from 1980 to 2000, and an assistant professor from 1976 to 1980. Prior to obtaining these roles, he was a research associate for Research for Better Schools from 1973 to 1976, a history lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania in 1973, and an assistant director of academic services at Temple University in 1972. Previously, he worked as an assistant professor of humanities at San Francisco State College from 1966 to 1968, an assistant professor of history at Moore College of Arts & Sciences from 1962 to 1965, and a history instructor at Franklin and Marshall College from 1963 to 1964.
Dr. Blum began his career at Franklin and Marshall College, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in government in 1959. He followed this opportunity at the University of Pennsylvania from 1960 to 1970, receiving a Master of Arts in English History before graduating with a PhD in Modern European History. He continued his studies at Temple University, completing postgraduate coursework and advanced studies in psychoeducational processes in 1973.
An expert in his field, Dr. Blum has contributed numerous works as a speaker and writer. He has been an invited speaker and lecturer for such academic institutions as the American Association for Higher Education, the Forum for the Liberal Arts with the American Association of Colleges, and the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. He has also authored several works, including "The Austro Marxists, 1890-1918: A Psychobiographical Study" in 1985, "Continuity, Quantum, Continuum, and Dialectic: The Foundational Logics of Western Historical Thinking" in 2006, and "Kafka's Social Discourse: An Aesthetic Search for Community" in 2011. Additionally, Dr. Blum has contributed articles to such publications as the European Journal of Law and Economics, the International Review of Comparative Public Policy, the Journal of the International Congress for Individualized Instruction, Resources in Education, and Southern Social Studies Quarterly, for whom he has served as contributing editor since 2011, and previously from 1980 to 2003. Dr. Blum is focused increasingly on historical logic, he works in the field of phenomenological history. Two articles published recently articulate his approach .The first is "Phenomenological time, Historical Time, and the writing of history". This was published in the Journal of the Philosophy of History. The second is called the "The Living Present in its Phases and Profiles; A Phenomenology of Phenomenology Augmented by Stylistics." This was published in the Journal of Philosophic Frontiers.
In addition to his primary trade, Dr. Blum is affiliated with various professional organizations. Since 1980, he has been recognized as a lifetime member on the Commission on Academic Excellence for the University of Louisville. A member of myriad committees and subcommittees for the University of Louisville, he was the University of Louisville representative at the Metroversity Organization of Professionals for Educational Development from 1979 to 1981, a grants program reviewer at the National Institute of Education from 1983 to 1985, a National Committee on Research and Evaluation member at the National Association for Remedial and Developmental Post Secondary Education from 1983 to 1985, and a member of the Center for the Humanities and Civic Leadership from 1987 to 1988. A former faculty senator for the History Department and the Interfaith Alliance at the University of Louisville from 1995 to 2001, Dr. Blum has also held various roles for the University of Louisville Chapter of the American Association of University Professors, including secretary from 1979 to 1982, president from 1982 to 1985, acting vice president from 1986 to 1988, and executive secretary of the Kentucky Conference from 1985 to 1988.
In recognition of his contributions, Dr. Blum has accrued several accolades and honors throughout his career. A nominee for the Danforth Teaching Fellow from Moore College of Art and Science in 1965, he received the Swiss American Foundation Fellowship in International Relations from the University of Zurich in 1959, a Fulbright Fellowship in Modern European History from the University of Vienna in 1965, a Visiting Fellowship in History and the Humanities from the Center for Studies of the Person in 1971, and a Junior Scholarship in the Social Sciences from the University of Louisville in 1979. He was also presented with an Instructional Development Award from the Kentuckiana Metroversity in 1979. The University of Louisville awarded him a Graduate Research Award in 1988, an Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Curriculum Award in 1991, an Arts and Sciences Research Award in 1993, and a Project Completion Grant from the President's Research Initiative in 1991.
A Graduate Research Grantee from 1994 to 1995, Dr. Blum has been presented with a Writing Across the Curriculum Grant from the Arts & Sciences College of University of Louisville from 1993 to 1994, a Travel Grant by the International Research & Exchanges Board since 1995, a President's Research Initiative Grant from the University of Louisville in 1995 to 1996, a Grant from the University of Louisville and Jefferson County Public Schools from 1997 to 1998, and an Exceptional Performance Honor by the 2B Periodic Review in 1999. Furthermore, he has been a nominee for the History Department for Distinguished Teaching Award at the Arts & Sciences College of University of Louisville from 1996 to 1997, and the Edward Goodwin Ballard Prize in Phenomenology in 2008. Looking towards the future, Dr. Blum hopes to cement his legacy at University of Louisville as a visionary and hard-working leader in the field.
