With more than 40 years of professional experience, Dr. Edwards currently holds several professional positions, including development board chair at UT Tyler since 2017, advisor for libraries at Baylor University since 2001, owner and president at Shreveport Spring, Brake & Axle, Inc. since 1998, board chairman and chief executive officer at Odessa Spring Brake & Axle, Inc. since 1991, and chief executive officer and chairman of the board of directors for Pruitt Company Inc. since 1988. He also served as vice president for CountryMedic, Inc. from 2001 to 2003, vice president for W.C. Square, Inc. from 1976 to 1992, as well as president and owner of Edwards & Associates, Inc. from 1984 to 1996. Earlier in his career, he worked as president and owner of Walker Auto Spring, Inc. from 1978 to 1988, executive vice president of W.C. Supply Co. from 1977 to 1983, and corporate coordinator for Dillard Department Stores from 1976 to 1977.
Prior to these opportunities, Dr. Edwards pursued an education at Tyler Junior College, earning an Associate of Arts, cum laude, in 1974. He continued his studies at Baylor University, receiving a Bachelor of Business Administration two years later. He concluded his academic experience in 2016 at East Texas Baptist University, receiving a doctorate in humanities. Furthermore, he was ordained as a deacon for the Baptist Church in 2000.
Beyond his work in the field, Dr. Edwards has lent his expertise to multiple organizations in relation to his areas of expertise. Since 1991, he has served as a general partner for ESE Properties, and he was elected to the board of directors for the Texas Baptist Missions Foundation in 2015. From 1990 to 2009, he was recognized as an executive committee member for the East Texas State Fair, and he was appointed as vice president of the Camp Fannin Association, Inc., a position he has maintained since 1992. Additionally, he has worked as managing general partner for the Heritage Drive Plaza Office Suites from 1992 to 1995, elected member and president for the East Texas Symphony Orchestra Foundation, and as a commercial real estate investor in Louisiana and Texas.
Dr. Edwards has also contributed in numerous capacities to charitable and civil establishments within his community. Currently holding a position on their board of directors, he was involved with the Timberline Baptist Camp and Conference Center as treasurer from 1989 to 1990, 2002 to 2003, and 2007 to 2012, as well as trustee from 1987 to 1990, 2001 to 2004, and 2006 to 2015. Since 1988, he has served on the board of associates for East Texas Baptist University, where he previously worked as chair of the board of trustees from 2003 to 2005, executive committee member and vice chairman for the board of trustees from 2002 to 2003, on the board of trustees from 1995 to 2005, president of the board of associates from 1991 to 1993, and the vice president of the board of associates from 1990 to 1991. In addition to holding the position of board president for East Texas Symphony Orchestra since 2009, he has previously offered his efforts to Rotary International District 5830, Baylor University, Texas Rose Festival Association board, Rose Garden Trust Fund, Smith County Historical Society, Carnegie History Center, East Texas State Fair, Smith County Youth Foundation and the First Baptist Church of Tyler, Texas.
With active membership to such organizations as the East Texas Symphony Orchestra Foundation, the Camp Ford Historical Association, the Rotary Club of Tyler, and the East Texas Baylor Club, Dr. Edwards has maintained involvement with many esteemed institutions throughout his career. From 2008 to 2011, he served as a committee member on the nomination board for the Baptist General Convention of Texas, and he was appointed to the board of directors for the Young Audiences of Northeast Texas from 2002 to 2014. He contributed to the board of governors for the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce and Smith County Historical Society from 1984 to 1994, as well as the board of directors for the Tyler Jaycees from 1982 to 1985, and as treasurer for the Tyler Chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans from 1979 to 1983. He is also affiliated with the Willow Brook Country Club, Hollytree Country Club, Historical Tyler, Inc., and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Throughout his career, Dr. Edwards has been recognized for his contributions. A recipient of the Crystal Dove of Peace Award by Rotary International, he was honored as a Paul Harris fellow in 1998 by the same organization. In 2009, he received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the Baylor University Alumni Association, after which he received a Founder's Medal by East Texas Baptist University in 2017. He received the Texas Association of Symphony Orchestras Patron of the Year award in 2013.
