A retired registered nurse and enterostomal therapy clinical nurse specialist since 1998, Dr. Beaton spent the latter portion of her career as a senior school nurse in Rio Rancho, NM, from 2001 to 2005 and at Colinas del Norte Elementary School in the Rio Ranch Public Schools. Throughout the course of her extensive career, she worked in various practice areas, including as the CEO of Paumer Associates International, Inc., director and provost for the New Mexico School of Enterostomal Nursing, CEO of Enterostomal Therapy Nursing Education and Training Consultants, and clinical nurse specialist and educator for Presbyterian Health Care Services in Albuquerque, NM.
A certified enterostomal therapy nurse and certified health education specialist, Dr. Beaton also lectured in her field. She has served on the editorial board for the World Council of Enterostomal Therapists since 2003. She was also a reviewer for "RN Magazine." She is a longtime member of the New Mexico School Nurses Association, New Mexico Health Care Association, and New Mexico Association for Home and Hospice Care, has served on the board of directors for the Association for the Advancement of Wound Care and the Women Veterans of New Mexico, and was a regional president for the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses Society as well as national secretary for the WOCN.
Dr. Beaton earned a Diploma of Hospital Base Nurse at the Rhode Island Hospital School of Nursing, BSN at the University of Arizona, and MS in Human Resource Management at Golden Gate University, followed by postgraduate work at the University of Texas at Austin, an EdD at the University of New Mexico, and an MSN at the University of Phoenix. A commissioned ensign in the U.S. Navy, Dr. Beaton earned the rank of lieutenant commander in 1979. She then headed the Ostomy Clinic and served as a command ostomy nurse at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, VA, from 1985 to 1988, when she retired from the US Navy.
Active in her community, Dr. Beaton was a moderator, chairman, board of directors, and vice moderator for St. Paul's Church in Rio Rancho, NM. She was also an advisory board member for Keep Rio Rancho Beautiful, spent time on the administrative board for the Baylake United Methodist Church of Virginia Beach, VA, and was on the board of directors for the New Mexico Museum of Military History, and was an active member of the American Cancer Society.
Highlighted in close to 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Nursing, and Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Dr. Beaton enjoys spending her free time doing gourmet cooking, flower arranging, interior designing, and going hot air ballooning.
