With more than 30 years of professional experience, Dr. Williams is a widely regarded physician and educator. He has served as a Professor of Anesthesiology with the University of Pittsburgh since 2003 and a staff anesthesiologist with the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System since 2015. He has served in a number of other roles with the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) since 1998, including Chief of Anesthesiology at Presbyterian University Hospital, Chair of Anesthesiology for the University of Pittsburgh and as Associate Medical and Scientific Director of International Operations with UPMC. Prior to joining the University of Pittsburgh, he was with the UCLA School of Medicine from 1991 to 1998 and with the University of Texas Medical School in Houston from 1983 to 1991.
Prior to pursuing a career in medicine, Dr. Williams received a Bachelor of Science in zoology from Texas A&M University in 1977. He went on to complete an MD through the Baylor College of Medicine in 1979. He completed an internship with St. Joseph's Hospital and a residency with the University of Texas Medical School both in Houston, TX; followed by a fellowship at Guy's Hospital in London, England.
Dr. Williams maintains involvement with a wide range of medical organizations, including the Association of University Anesthesiologists (elected), the American Medical Association (AMA) where he currently serves on the Council on Medical Education (elected), Medical Group Management Association and the Society for Education in Anesthesiology. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee with the Allegheny County Medical Society. Previously he assisted the organization as President, President of the Board, Vice-president and secretary. He was recognized as an inaugural fellow with the American Heart Association in 1995 and currently serves as a representative from the AMA to the National Board of Medical Examiners.
In recognition of his contributions, Dr. Williams has been listed in a wide range of honors publications, including the National Registry of Who's Who in Executives and Professionals, Strathmore Who's Who, National Registry of Who's Who and Guide to America's Top Physicians. He was selected to receive the Inspirational Physician Mentor Award from the American Medical Association's Women Physicians Congress in 2010 and was recently elected to the Council on Medical Education with the American Medical Association. He was recognized as a nominee for the Secretary of Defense Employer Support Freedom Award in 2008 and as a Health Sciences Ambassador with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine from 2007 to 2014.
