Dr. Riabowol serves as a professor and head of the Aging and Immortalization Laboratory at the University of Calgary.
CALGARY, AB, January 18, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Karl Riabowol has been included in Marquis Who's Who. With more than 30 years of research experience, Dr. Riabowol serves as a professor and head of the Aging and Immortalization Laboratory at the University of Calgary and is a current member of the Robson DNA Sciences Centre, serving as a core member of the Departments of Oncology, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biology since 1991. In these roles, he directs the biomedical research of both graduate and postdoctoral trainees, acquires funding to support basic biomedical research, disseminates results through publication, and handles normal faculty duties such as instructing and mentoring students. In addition, he works as a full member of the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute, the Alberta Children's Hospital Research Institute and is an Associate Scientific Staff Member with the Tom Baker Cancer Centre. He also serves as the director of the Hybridoma Facility and Cancer Cell Bank.
Dr. Riabowol began his career as a student of Simon Fraser University, obtaining an Honors B.Sc. in biology in 1980. He went on to study aging at the University of Southern California and biochemistry at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, earning a Ph.D. in 1985. He pursued Post Doctoral training at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory before being promoted to a Staff Associate there, and later accepted an Assistant Professorship as a Scholar of the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research at the University of Calgary. As an expert in the field, he has published a number of seminal papers regarding control of the cell cycle, the stress response, cell aging and cancer in journals such as Cell, Nature, Science, Nature Genetics, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, among others. His papers include titles such as "The cdc2 Kinase is a nuclear protein that is essential for mitosis in mammalian cells", "Suppression of the novel growth inhibitor p33ING1 promotes neoplastic transformation" and "Paternal Age is Positively Linked to Telomere Length of Children". In addition, he holds several patents including ones for the DNA sequence encoding a tumor suppressor gene and methods of modulating apoptosis.
A respected voice in the medical science industry, Dr. Riabowol has been recognized numerous times throughout his career for his contributions. He is the recipient of _40 awards including the Walter Nicoli Prize for Research in Aging, a Fellow Award from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, the Golden Apple Award for excellence in graduate science education at the University of Calgary and the national Killam Annual Professorship Award. In addition, he has been invited to speak at multiple international seminars and meetings, including the Lederle Laboratories Seminar Series and the Canadian Association on Gerontology's annual meeting.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Riabowol intends to expand upon his research based on his publication "Telomere length correlates with lifespan of dog breeds" to develop a novel model to study biological and cellular aging and will continue to train the next generation of researchers to contribute to our understanding of the aging process, and the escape from aging seen in cancer cells.
