With more than 30 years of experience in medicine, Dr. Smith has been a professor of clinical surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine since 2015. Prior to that, he worked with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine from 2012 to 2015, with the West Penn Allegheny Health System in 2012, and as vice chair and interim chair for the department of surgery at the Carilion Clinic from 2008 to 2011. From 1994 to 2008, he was with Wichita Surgical Specialists. Earlier in his career, he was with the U.S. Navy Medical Corps, serving in Okinawa, Japan and Oakland, CA as a staff surgeon, team leader, assistant director, associate director, and panelist from 1987 to 1994. He retired from the Navy as a captain of the U.S. Naval Reserve Medical Corps in 2006.
Dr. Smith began his career at Arkansas Tech University, obtaining a BS, with honors, in 1977. He went on to earn an MA from the University of Arkansas College of Medicine in 1981, completing a residency in general surgery at the Kansas University School of Medicine from 1981 to 1986. From 1986 to 1987, he worked in a fellowship in trauma and surgical critical care from the Shock Trauma Associates of California at the Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, CA. He is licensed to practice in Arkansas, Kansas, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Florida. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery, has special qualifications in critical care, and is a member of the Halsted Society, the American College of Surgeons, the Western Surgical Association, the Western Trauma Association, the Kansas Medical Society, and the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.
Throughout his career, Dr. Smith has contributed to a variety of publications, including more than 20 book chapters, more than 120 articles for professional journals, and nearly 500 presentations. He contributed to two monographs, "Gasless Laparoscopy. The Next Phase in Minimally Invasive Surgery" and "Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient 2014," as well as to three multimedia publications, "Basic Ultrasound for Surgeons," "Basic Ultrasound for Surgeons, 2nd Edition," and "Ultrasound Skills for Residents" for the American College of Surgeons Post Graduate Course. He has been decorated with numerous awards, including a Health Professions Scholarship Award, the Navy Achievement Medal, the Navy Unit Citation Ribbon, the Navy Humanitarian Service Ribbon, the Navy Southwest Asia Service Ribbon, the Navy Sea Service Ribbon, the Navy Overseas Service Ribbon, the National Defense Ribbon, the Kuwaiti Liberation Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. His additional honors include the Outstanding Pre-Medical Student Award, the J. Bradley Aust Award, and the Via Christi Medical Center St. Luke's Award. He also received grants from numerous organizations, including Tonometrics, Inc., Origin Medical Systems, the California Wellness Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. He is married to Nellie Shinmon, with whom he has two children, Ryan and Nicole.
