Dr. Piirto is a consulting forester and owner of Crestline Forestry Inc. in Hobart, WI, a business he established in 2004. An extensive career history that also included serving on the Board of Directors for the Upper Salinas Las Tablas Resource Conservation District since 2015, as a professional consultant and longtime instructor for the U.S. Forest Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture since 1977, and as a professor emeritus at California Polytechnic State University since 2015, after teaching in the Department of Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences at the university for 30 years and heading the department twice, he has a wealth of experience and expertise to offer clients. In addition to his years in academia, Dr. Piirto was a professional forester for the Sierra National Forest, U.S. Forest Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture for ten years, where he also spent time as a silviculturist, inventory forester, and presale forester, beginning in 1968.
A certified silviculturist, registered professional forester, certified forester, and certified California community college instructor, Dr. Piirto holds numerous SAF continuing education certificates. He first earned a BS at the University of Nevada in 1970, MS in Forest/Wood Science at Colorado State University in 1971, and Ph.D. in Wood Science at the University of California at Berkeley in 1977.
A former visiting professor at Seinajoki University of Applied Sciences in Finland during Fall 2006 and Fall 2014 quarters, Dr. Piirto also taught as an instructor for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and was a member of the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection from 2007 to 2011. He has contributed more than 40 articles to professional publications, over 40 technical reports, and numerous study guides, professional reports, and opinion editorials. He has additionally presented over 80 invited papers at various venues. His dedication to the field earned him approximately a dozen awards, most recently including a Francis Raymond Lifetime Forestry Achievement Award in 2016, numerous awards from the California Polytechnic State University, including a President's Diversity Award in 2016, and a Dr. Piirto Endowment for Excellence in Forestry Education from California Polytechnic State University in 2015, as well as an award from the Society of American Foresters and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
An elected fellow of the Society of American Foresters and member of the Forest Products Research Society, the Society of Wood Science and Technology, and several fraternities, Dr. Piirto is married to Mary Louise Cruz with two stepchildren. He has been highlighted in many editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America.
