Dr. Deicken is a highly regarded neuropsychiatrist and clinical neuroscientist. He has been a professor of psychiatry with the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine from 2003-2009; an associate professor from 1997 to 2003; and an assistant professor from 1992 to 1997. His faculty appointment included working at the San Francisco VA Medical Center for 20 years as a staff physician, and he also served as Medical Director of the VA Psychiatric Partial Hospital Program from 2002 to 2005. He began his career at Stanford University, where he earned a BA in Psychology and an MS in Biological Sciences in 1980. Four years later, after earning an MD at the University of California in San Francisco, he worked there for four years as a resident physician in Psychiatry, followed by a three year VA Biological Psychiatry research fellowship utilizing in-vivo phosphorous and proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging to study human brain disorders.
A diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Deicken is a licensed physician through the Medical Board of California. He has been a consultant for Bristol-Myers Squibb, Roche Bioscience, and Exodon Neuroscience. He has peer reviewed manuscripts for numerous journals in his field of expertise and served as an editorial board member of the Journal of Integrative Neuroscience. Maintaining involvement with a wide range of professional organizations, Dr. Deicken is recognized as a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (UK), Collegium Intemationale Neuropsychopharmacologicum, and International Society of Affective Disorders. He is also a member of the Society for Neuroscience, Society of Biological Psychiatry International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, New York Academy of Sciences, and the American Medical Association. Since 7993, he has been an alumni mentor with the Stanford University Student Alumni Mentor Program.
In 2000 and 2004, Dr. Deicken's research was selected by the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation for lndependent Investigator Awards, and for Stanley Foundation Research Awards from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill in 1997 and 1998. He also won Young Investigator Awards in 1992 and 1994 from the Brain and Behavior Research Foundation, and 1991 Dista Fellowship Award from the Society of Biological Psychiatry. Dr. Deicken also earned a VA Physician Research Associate Career Development Award from 1991 to 1995.
