The Fred Morgan Kirby professor of civil rights at Lafayette College since 1998, Dr. Murphy is a former professor of political science as well as of American history and politics at Pennsylvania State University, where he also served as a fellow of the Institute for the Arts and Humanistic Studies. Throughout his journey in academia, Dr. Murphy has taught political science, history, and constitutional law courses, including American Constitutional Law, Liberty in the United States, The First Amendment, Introduction to U.S. Politics, and The American Presidency, as well as seminars on writing judicial biography. Published in 1982, Dr. Murphy's first book, "The Brandeis/Frankfurter Connection: The Secret Political Activities of Two Supreme Court Justices," was the subject of a front-page article in the New York Times. The book spoke about the financial relationship between Justice Louis D. Brandeis and former Harvard law professor and future Sypreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter. The book was the recipient of a Certificate of Merit by the American Bar Association. His second book, "Fortas: The Rise and Ruin of a Supreme Court Justice," was published in 1988, and regarded the life and career of Abe Fortas, who was denied the Chief Justiceship and later resigned from the U.S. Supreme Court after his close political ties to President Lyndon B. Johnson and his financial relationship with Louis Wolfson. This book was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize, a Robert F. Kennedy Book Award, and a National Book Award.
His third book, "Wild Bill: The Legend and Life of William O. Douglas," which was published in 2003, is a biography of the longest-serving Supreme Court justice in U.S. history. His fourth book, "Scalia: A Court of One," is the story of Antonin Scalia, one of the most polarizing figures ever to serve on the nation's highest court, and was published in 2014. In between writing his second and third biography, Dr. Murphy worked with Larry Berman, co-authoring "Approaching Democracy" in 1996, which is now in its eighth edition.
Dr. Murphy received a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Massachusetts, summa cum laude, in 1973. Five years later, he finalized his PhD in Government and Foreign Affairs at the University of Virginia. Honored several times for his teachings, he received a Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Award for distinguished undergraduate teaching in 1987, and from 1984 to 1987, he was the recipient of a Citation Award and was once a finalist for the national Professional of the Year Award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. He has also been highlighted in every edition of Who's Who in America since 2002, as well as many editions of Who's Who in the World, Who's Who in the East, Who's Who in American Law, and Who's Who in American Education.
