Enjoying a very successful and lengthy career in medicine, biochemistry, and academia, Dr. Collins initially worked as a medical research associate in the department of biochemistry at the University of Ottawa in Canada from 1967 to 1969. Accepted to teach at Emory School of Medicine in Atlanta soon thereafter, he was an assistant professor and associate professor of medicine for seven years before becoming a full professor of medicine and associate professor of biochemistry in 1976. Remaining with the university for another 15 years, Dr. Collins then accepted an appointment at the University of Kentucky (UK) in Lexington, where he would later retire.
Dr. Collins spent a total of 17 years at UK. Serving as vice chancellor of research and graduate studies for 11 years, associate vice president for research and graduate studies for five years, and teaching as a professor of obstetrics-gynecology and biochemistry for a total of 17 years in the school's medical center, he had made a lasting impression on campus, not only as a teacher and mentor, but also as a biomedical researcher. Fully retiring in 2008, he had contributed more than 300 articles to peer-reviewed articles as the result of his research. He also conducted numerous lectures in his area of expertise, was responsible for the development of methods for measuring various estrogens and androgens and the discovery of inhibitors of angiogenesis, and since 1982, simultaneously worked for the Department of Veteran Affairs as an Career Research Scientist.
Earning a BS in Biology at Emory University in 1959, an MS in Zoology at the University of Georgia in 1963, and a PhD in Zoology at the University of Georgia in 1966, Dr. Collins has been included in both Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare and Who's Who in Science and Engineering for his work. Born in Cairo, Dr. Collins later married Patricia Ann Burg and had three children.
