A widely-regarded educator in the field of clinical microbiology and infectious disease, Dr. Jacobs has served as a professor with Case Western Reserve University and as Director of Clinical Microbiology at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, Cleveland, Ohio for almost 40 years. In this position, he draws upon more than 40 years of experience as a medical researcher, educator and physician. Actively involved in the scientific community, Dr. Jacobs has served as a member of many national and international committees, including national respiratory tract infection treatment guideline committees and the bacterial contamination committees of the International Society for Blood Transfusion and the AABB. Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Jacobs has been continually recognized for his focus on research in the area of infectious disease and clinical microbiology. Noted as one of the most published faculty member of Case Western Reserve University, he has published more than 480 publications in peer-reviewed journals, which have been cited more than 25,000 times.
Dr. Jacobs' greatest achievements have included the detection of the first multi-drug resistant strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae ("pneumococcus") in South Africa and the first documentation of intercontinental spread of these multi-drug resistant organisms. In addition, he participated in the development of treatment guidelines for acute otitis media, community acquired pneumonia and acute bacterial rhinosinusitis, as well as guidelines for the prevention of bacterial contamination of platelet products. Dr. Jacobs has completed research in antimicrobial susceptibility of respiratory tract pathogens; application of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic parameters to interpretation of antimicrobial susceptibility of bacterial pathogens; detection, genetic basis and treatment of carbapenem resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae and Acinetobacter baumannii; and detection and prevention of bacterial contamination of platelet products. He is also recognized for the study of rapid diagnostic methods for bacteremia and other infections, epidemiology and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of pneumococcal serotypes following introduction of conjugate vaccines.
Dr. Jacobs began a career in medical research upon completing formal education at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, where he received a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery in 1971, Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in 1974, Doctor of Public Health in 1976 and PhD in 1979. During this time, he developed an interest in the laboratory diagnosis of infectious disease. Since then, Dr. Jacobs has been recognized as a licensed specialist pathologist and licensed medical practitioner with the South African Medical and Dental Council and as a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists in England. Upon relocating to the United States in 1979, Dr. Jacobs became a diplomate of the American Board of Medical Microbiology and has been a licensed medical practitioner in Ohio since 1981.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Jacobs has been continually recognized for his contributions to the scientific community. He was most recently selected as a fellow with the American Academy of Microbiology. Dr. Jacobs currently serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Diagnostic Microbiology & Infectious Disease. He is further credited as a contributing author to many journals, including Antimicrobial Agents & Chemothetrapy, Journal of Clinical Microbiology, Blood, Transfusion, Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology, mBio and Transfusion. Dr. Jacobs has also served as an examiner with the American Board of Medical Microbiology. He has delivered speeches and presentations at both national and international conferences.
