Frederick S. Sierles, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Since 2016, Dr. Sierles has been recognized as a professor emeritus of Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, having been a professor with the school from 1988 to 2016, and a chair, residency director, director of medical student education, associate professor, assistant professor, and instructor in psychiatry and behavioral sciences from 1973 to 2002. In addition, he served as a member of the Master Teacher Guild from 2009 to 2014 and as a community mentor of Sierles Community from 2014 to 2016. Earlier in his career, he worked as an associate attending psychiatrist at Mount Sinai Hospital in Chicago from 1973 to 1974, as well as a staff psychiatrist at U.S. Reynolds Army Hospital from 1971 to 1973.

After receiving an AB from Columbia University in 1963, Dr. Sierles earned an MD at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in 1967. He completed an internship at Cook County Health and Hospitals System from 1967 to 1968, and a first-year residency in psychiatry at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai from 1968 to 1969. He then completed his residency in psychiatry at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science from 1969 to 1971, where he was the chief resident from 1970 to 1971. He has also been recognized as a diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

As an expert in the field, Dr. Sierles is associated with numerous professional circles, including the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry, the Illinois Psychiatric Society, the American Association of Directors of Psychiatric Residency Training, and the American Psychiatric Association. Additionally, Dr. Sierles is a member of Phi Epsilon Pi, and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

Dr. Sierles has co-authored many creative works within his profession. He was the co-author of "USMLE Behavioral Science Made Ridiculously Simple" in 1998, editor of "Clinical Behavioral Science" in 1982, "Behavioral Science for Medical Students" in 1993, co-author of "Behavioral Science for the Boards" in 1987, and co-author of "General Hospital Psychiatry" in 1985. He has also contributed 40 articles in professional journals throughout his career.

Inspired by his parents to become a medical educator, Dr. Sierles has been awarded numerous accolades in recognition of his professional accomplishments. An honoree as a distinguished lifetime fellow of the American Psychiatric Association in 2006, Dr. Sierles earned the Seymour Vestermark Psychiatric Educator Award from the American Psychiatric Association and National Institute of Mental Health in 2003. In addition, he was a grantee from the National Institutes of Mental Health from 1974 to 1983, as well as the recipient of more than 20 teaching awards over the duration of his career.

Married with two children and three grandchildren, Dr. Sierles enjoys reading about sociopolitical aspects of medical education, taking care of the family dog, attending movies and plays, watching news and sports, and riding his recumbent bike.
