Dr. Leyse-Wallace is a retired clinical dietitian, speaker, and author who has specialized in nutrition and mental health for much of her career. She holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of California at Davis, Master of Science from the University of Kansas, and Doctor of Philosophy from The University of Arizona. She has served as adjunct faculty member at Mesa Community College in San Diego. And formerly taught for two years at Pima County Community College in Arizona.
During her years as a clinical dietitian, Dr. Leyse-Wallace was employed with Osawatomie State Hospital is Osawatomie, Kansas, The Menninger Foundation in Topeka, Kansas, Mesa Vista Hospital (now Sharp-Mesa Vista) in San Diego, and HCA Willow Park Hospital in Plano, Texas. Her practice included providing nutritional care for patients of all ages hospitalized for eating disorders, alcohol and drug abuse, and general psychiatric diagnoses. She worked as a provider of nutrition care for Group Health Medical Associates in Tucson, Arizona, part-time for Sierra Tucson and for Hospice Family Care while pursuing her doctoral degree.
Since retiring from clinical practice, Dr. Leyse-Wallace has written three books: "Nutrition and Mental Health", "Linking Nutrition to Mental Health: A Scientific Exploration", and "The Metaparadigm of Clinical Dietetics: Derivation and Applications", a proposal for organizing knowledge, practice, and research in clinical dietetics. She has authored booklets, and articles in the quarterly newsletter of the Behavioral Health Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group. She has made presentations and webinars addressing the role of nutrition in supporting mental health and the performance of physical examinations focusing on observation of physical changes related to altered nutritional status.
Dr. Leyse-Wallace is a longstanding member of The American Dietetic Association (now the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics), and is affiliated with the Behavioral Health Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group, which presented her with an Excellence in Practice in Mental Illness Award for 2009-2010. She served as the Mental Health Resource professional for the group.
