An expert in the field of mechanical engineering, Dr. Chun serves as a research scientist with the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS), having been a member of the Division of Physical Metrology with the Institute since December 27, 2004. In this role, he researches water flow standards and ultrasonic flow metering. In addition, he is working on developing mathematical models for comparison calibration and hopes to develop a working knowledge of feedback control on turbulent flow for drag reduction.
Dr. Chun began his career as a student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), earning a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science, and a PhD. During his postdoctoral studies, he worked on a project utilizing laser Doppler anemometry at the Darmstadt University of Technology (TU Darmstadt). He is certified as a technical assessor of fluid flow by the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme. He will join the faculty of the Science of Measurement at the University of Science and Technology (UST) in March 2018; it is a joint graduate course with the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science.
A respected voice in the industry, he has published numerous articles on fluid flow in scientific journals, and he is a member of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers. In recognition of his contributions, he was named one of the Best Reviewers in 2016 in Measurement Science and Technology. He is also known for his research focus on the water flow standard, having extended the water flow standard from (0.6 - 400) m3/h to (0.01 - 2000) m3/h.
Dr. Chun attributes his success to the support he received from his professors, Dr. Hyung Jin Sung from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and Dr. Cameron Tropea from the Darmstadt University of Technology (Germany). He is also grateful to his parents who showed him the value of self-independence, generosity, and love. In his spare time, Dr. Chun enjoys choir singing and studying various subjects such as quantum mechanics and Catholic theology at the beginning level.
