NEW YORK, NY, February 06, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Frederick M. Schweitzer, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
An internationally renowned historian, Dr. Schweitzer has been professor emeritus at Manhattan College since 2000, having been a professor of history since 1958, as well as founder and director of the Holocaust Resource Center since 1996. He is known for his expertise in European history spanning from ancient times to the modern age. In addition, to his academic appointments, he has held a number of administrative posts, including as chair of the history department, liaison officer to the New York University Program for Professional Development, head of Manhattan's reaccreditation by the Middles States Association, and a member of the College Senate as its speaker and chair of the Educational Policies Committee.
Dr. Schweitzer began his career at Lehigh University, obtaining a BA in history in 1954, after having served in the U.S. Air Force. He then studied at Columbia University, earning a MA in British history in 1955, and a PhD in European history in 1972. As part of the effort to implement the Second Vatican Council's Nostra Aetate and effect reconciliation and understanding between Jews and Roman Catholics, Dr. Schweitzer--though still finishing his doctorate--was asked and wrote A History of the Jews since the First Century A.D. (1971). With Marvin Perry, he went on to write Antisemitism (2002) and Antisemitic Myths (2008).
Dr. Schweitzer became a legally recognized expert on antisemitism and testified in the successful prosecution of Ernst Zundel for hate speech and Holocaust denial, an experience that inspired his essay on "Antisemitism and International Law and National Legal Systems" (2016). He has written numerous essays, book reviews, articles, editorials, and letters to the editor, as well as given many public lectures, on Christian/Catholic-Jewish relations, the historical Jesus, Jewish economic history, the Holocaust, Israel reborn, and has advocated incorporating Jewish history as a necessary part of general history. Dr. Schweitzer's Great Issues in European History was a pioneering course on the Holocaust at a Catholic institution (1960s), as was his creation of the Holocaust Center at Manhattan. His present research is on Benjamin Disraeli's ideas of history, religion, and race and follows from his essay "Disraeli's Boomerang Efforts to Combat Antisemitism" (2009).
