Dr. Kriss is a retired physicist who dedicated most of his career to the Eastman Kodak Company at their main research laboratories in Rochester, NY. The American technology company, who is best known for producing imaging products with its historical basis on photography, also provides packaging, functional printing, graphic communications, and professional services for businesses around the world. Dr. Kriss was also the Executive Director of the Center for Electronic Imaging Systems at the University of Rochester where he taught out of the Computer and Electrical Engineering Department. Dr. Kriss finished his career at the Sharp Laboratories of America in Camas, Washington where he headed a group of scientists and engineers working on issues of color and image reproduction for advanced multipurpose printers and scanners.
Earning a BA, MS, and PhD in Physics at the University of California, Los Angeles, between 1962 and 1969, Dr. Kriss went straight to work for the technology giant Kodak as a senior physicist in the Kodak Research Laboratories, KRL. As he continued to climb the corporate ladder, he gained the roles of senior staff member of KRL, laboratory head in KRL, manager of electronic imaging of research laboratories, manager of research and development, a role he upheld for three years in the 1980s in Tokyo, Japan, and manager of image processing in the algorithm laboratory upon his return to Rochester.
During his career, Dr. Kriss enjoyed publishing his research and expertise in various professional journals, including the Physical Review Letters, the Journal of Low Temperature Physics, and the Journal of the Society of Photographic Science and Technology. He also authored a chapter in "Theory of Photographic Process" in 1977 and served on the editorial review board for Optics Encyclopedia authoring a chapter on Digital Photography, and was editor-in-chief for both the Wiley-Image Science and Technology Series of Imaging Science and Technology, IS&T, and the Handbook of Digital Imaging, a three volume set.
A longstanding member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Optical Society of America, the Society for Imaging Science and Technology, and the International Society for Optics and Photonics, and former member of the New York Academy of Sciences, Dr. Kriss has been a fellow of IS&T since 2005. He received a Service Award from IS&T in 2009, was named Scientist of the Year at the IS&T Electronic Imaging meeting in 2015and was named an honorary member of their organization in 2016. Dr. Kriss also received a Davies Award for Scientific Merit from the Royal Photographic Society of England in 1999, and was cited in the first edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering for 1992-1993.
Married to Gretchen Van Tries Renzel since 1963 with three children, Dr. Kriss currently serves as the president of his local homeowners' association. He formerly served as a member of the West Irondequoit School Board in Rochester, when he was living and working in New York.
