Retired teacher and longtime artist, Ms. Halley pursued a BS in Elementary Education at Indiana State University, earning her degree in 1961. Teaching fourth grade for the next seven years in New Albany and Seymour, IN, and Westminster, CO, she subsequently decided to put down the chalk permanently to concentrate solely on her artwork at the age of 38. Becoming a portrait artist in Arvada, CO, in 1979, she has long since been practicing her talents, which include dry brush water color, portraits, and human figures with botanical and architectural backgrounds. Her paintings have been included in numerous one-woman shows and exhibitions in Colorado since the early 1980s, including at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder. She has also exhibited with the Watercolor Art Society of Houston, the Colorado Artist Guild, the Fallbrook Art Center, Wichita Center for the Arts, Missouri Watercolor Member Invitational Exhibition, Salmagundi Art Club, the Armory Art Center, and the Arts Club of Washington. Her paintings have also been printed in numerous art books over the past nearly 30 years. In 2013, her work was featured in Splash Retrospective, 20 Years of Contemporary Watercolor Excellence, published by North Light Books.
Ms. Halley served as a juror for the Colorado Watercolor Society fall exhibition in 2002. A longstanding member of numerous organizations relative to her art, she is a signature member of the Missouri Watercolor Society, the Kansas Watercolor Society, where she was the recipient of an American Artist Cash Award, the National Watercolor Society, where she received a Del Mar College Award, the National Association of Women Artists, where she won a Cecil Shapiro Memorial Award, and the Catherine Lorillard Wolf Art Club, where she received both an Adriana Zahn Award and a Cynthia Goodgal Award. Her efforts also won her several other awards and recognitions including a Best in Show Award from the Colorado Watercolor Society in 2004, a cash award from the Missouri Watercolor Society Member Invitational Exhibition in 2011, and a 1st Place Award from the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club Annual Members Show.
Earlier in her career, Ms. Halley was president of the Clear Creek Valley Medical Auxiliary in Lakewood, CO. Today, she spends her free time participating in Bible study, working in her garden, and playing bridge. Married to Norman B. Halley with one son, Ms. Halley has been cited in over 25 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who of American Women, and Who's Who in the World.
Artist Statement:
My main objective in creating art is to show God's love for all His creations. I work primarily in portraits and the human figure because each person is unique and lovely in his or her own way, no matter the race, sex or age. The wrinkled faces of the elderly are equally as interesting and beautiful as the smooth faces of youth. Life has a way of etching its story on one's face, and I hope to convey some of this in the faces I paint.
People tend to make statements about themselves, whether consciously or subconsciously, by the way they dress, stand, wear their hair, or just by their "body English." I love painting details because they all contribute to the "sum total" of that one unique individual. I feel I must draw from all resources to capture the essence of that personality in one frozen moment in time. I want my paintings to have interest from a distance, but to draw the observer closer for a better look.
"Reverse pointalism" is perhaps the best way to explain how I paint. To create textures I paint in layers. I do not paint dots, but paint around small points of light, often making use of the nubbiness of a heavy cold press watercolor paper. I use very small brushes and with very little water. I wick moisture from the brush on a gunnysack towel to remove excess water. Hence the term, drybrush watercolor.
