CARRBORO, NC, February 07, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present William T. Generous Jr., PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Generous celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Known to everyone by his middle name "Tom," Dr. Generous was born in 1939 and educated through high school in Pawtucket, RI. He served in the U.S. Navy as an enlisted man, 1956-1959, becoming an aviation electronics technician petty officer, and an enlisted aircrewman in single-engine carrier aircraft. He was then selected as a Fleet Candidate for the NROTC and, through that program, won a place in the Class of 1963 at Brown University. There he earned an AB in American Literature, cum laude, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Along the way, he was athletic director and then President of Plantations House, Brown's innovative center for commuting students.
Commissioned an Ensign upon graduation, Dr. Generous then served in two destroyer-type ships during the Vietnam War. While on his first ship, USS Arnold J. Isbell (DD-869), he met and married Diane B. Kowalchuk, with whom he enjoyed more than 47 years together until her death in 2012. They had two daughters, Michelle, born in 1966, and Suzanne, born in 1969. Dr. Generous rose to full Lieutenant in his second ship, USS Vance, (DER-387) where he endured his "15 minutes of fame," as detailed in Neil Sheehan's The Arnheiter Affair.
Leaving the service in 1967, Dr. Generous went to graduate school at Stanford University, where he earned an MA (1968) and a PhD (1971) in American History. His dissertation, Swords and Scales: The Development of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, 1950-1969 was published by Kennikat Press in 1973. Two other books of the seven he has written were also published: The School Upon the Hillside: Choate Rosemary Hall, 1890-1990 (Choate 1995); and Sweet Pea at War: USS Portland (CA-33) (University Press of Kentucky, 2003).
Dr. Generous was a teacher, coach and housemaster at Choate Rosemary Hall from 1971 to 1999. In recognition of his excellent performance he was awarded the Independence Foundation Chair for the three-year term of 1983-1986, and was then the original holder of the Charles T. Wilson, Jr. Chair for its ten-year term, 1987-1997. He coached several sports at Choate, most notably the Girls Varsity Squash team, 1976-1987. These teams produced almost four dozen nationally-ranked players, including one national junior champion and won repeated New England Championships. Even after retiring as Head Coach, Dr. Generous continued his service as assistant coach of both the girls' team and the boys' team.
Retiring from Choate in 1999, Dr. Generous and his wife settled in Carrboro NC, only a few miles from UNC-Chapel Hill. There he served for a dozen years as an Adjunct Professor in both history and physical education. He is finally fully retired now, but enjoys living in the Tar Heel State.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, William T. Generous Jr., PhD, has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
