Dr. Akiyama began his career as a student at Keio University, obtaining an MD in 1966 and serving in a residency from 1967 to 1970. He next traveled to the United States to work in a residency at the Medical University of South Carolina from 1970 to 1973. He then returned to Japan to join the Keio University Hospital as an assistant professor from 1975 to 1983.
