Now retired, Dr. Frelow spent a total of 30 years in education, most recently as a superintendent of schools. After earning a BA and MA at San Francisco State College, he immediately began teaching at Oakland Unified Schools for six years before accepting a new position at Berkeley Unified Schools. Teaching for another year, he was then promoted to serve as the assistant to the superintendent.
In 1970, Dr. Frelow relocated to Westchester County, New York, where he had the opportunity to become the assistant superintendent for Greenburgh Schools in Hartsdale, ultimately earning the title of superintendent for another 15 years until retirement in 1990. He also taught as an adjunct professor at Columbia University and at Pace University for a total of 20 years, and continues to serve as a consultant for Wise Services in White Plains, New York, a position he has held for more than 50 years. He attributes his professional success to the encouragement he received from teachers at an early age.
Dr. Frelow completed a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in 1970, just prior to moving to New York. A certified teacher and administrator in both New York and California, he has held board of director roles for several organizations over the years, including for the Westchester Cable Commission, the Westchester Arts Council, and the Hartsdale Kiwanis. He is the author of "The Berkeley Plan for Desegregation" written in 1968, "Blood Runs Deep" in 2002, "At the Rainbow's End" in 2006, and "Smoke and Mirrors" in 2008. He is also the co-author and editor of the 1989 book "I Am a Blade of Grass," and he has contributed numerous articles to professional journals.
He is a fellow and former member of the board of directors for the Rotary of America, which honored him in 1991 with a Paul Harris Award. Dr. Frelow is the recipient of numerous awards including a grant in urban studies from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1969, a Citizen of the Year Award from Kappa Alpha Psi in 1978 and 1984, and an Executive Leadership Award from the Business Careers Club in Hartsdale in 1991. He has previously received a Dedication Award from the Dr. Robert D. Frelow Cultural Center in Hartsdale in 1991, and was honored by the Greenburgh Central Seven Education Foundation in 2005.
Dr. Frelow served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1964, exiting the military as a captain. He is married to Rena Frelow, and has three sons from a previous marriage (Robert Frelow Jr., Frederick and Michael) and is stepfather to Martin Hersh and Ruth Hersh. He has five grandchildren: Robert Frelow III, Jessica Frelow, Derek Frelow, Andrew Hersh, and Matthew Hersh. He loves to read and write, travel, take photographs, and attend musical performances. He has been highlighted several times in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World.
