Mr. Silverman received his JD from the Columbia University School of Law in 1964, having previously received Bachelor of Sciences Degrees in Electrical Engineering in 1960 from The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and in Industrial Management from MIT in 1961.
He was admitted to practice in the U.S. Supreme Court in 1971, New York in 1965, and the U.S. District Court of New York. As of February 2018, Mr. Silverman is practicing as a member of Rosenberg & Estis, P.C. as a building construction lawyer and as head of its construction law practice. Mr. Silverman previously served as a partner at Duane Morris LLP from 2008 through January 2018. He served previously as a partner at Thelen LLP from 1989 to 2008, and Golenbock and Barell from 1972 to 1989. From 1968 to 1972, Mr. Silverman was an associate at Golenbock and Barell. He began his legal career as an associate at Baer and Marks in 1965. He was a law clerk for Chief Judge Lumbard and other judges at the United States Second Circuit Court of Appeals from 1964-1965, and his sponsor for admission to the Bar was the Chief Judge.
Prior to his legal career, he served as an engineering assistant at General Electric from 1958 to 1962. Additionally, Mr. Silverman served his community as a member of the executive committee of the National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership from 1984 to 1990, and as a member of the board of governors of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Hillel Foundation from 1979 to 1984. He is a past Chair of the Board of Trustees of The Ramaz School in New York City.
Mr. Silverman has recently represented owners and developers in projects such as the September 11th World Trade Center Memorial and Museum, the JetBlue Terminal at JFK Airport, high-tech uplink facilities for Home Box Office, the Harlem Campus for the Hunter College School of Social Work of the City University of New York, the Barbara Walters Campus Center at Sarah Lawrence College, the new Learning Center at Barnard College, Eataly, the largest artisanal Italian food and wine marketplace in the world, located in a landmarked building in New York City, and also at the World Trade Center in New York City, the Prudential Center in Boston, and Century City in Los Angeles. Mr. Silverman represented the developer of the market-rate residential tower at City Point, a complex urban multi use project in Brooklyn. He has served multiple organizations in a wide range of capacities. He held multiple positions in the American Bar Association, including as a member of the Forum on the Construction Industry, as a member of the Committee on Construction Litigation, in the Committee on Design and Construction, in the Section on Real Property, and in the Section of Business Law. He also served the New York State Bar Association as a member of the sections on real estate, dispute resolution, torts, and insurance.
Mr. Silverman currently serves as a member of the Committee of Construction Law for the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. He is an associate member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, a professional member of the Construction Specifications Institute, and a member of the Federal Bar Council.
Mr. Silverman's contributions to his industry have been recognized with numerous awards and commendations. As a reputable and established lawyer, he has been listed in US News/Best Lawyers "The Best Lawyers in America," 2007-2018 (Construction Law). The son of Louis A. and Frances Silverman, Mr. Silverman was born and raised in Lewiston, Maine, and has been married since 1961 to Donna Zolov, born and raised in Portland, Maine. They have two children: Leonard and Daniel, and eight grandchildren.
