His work on developing "lunar concrete" with the potential to build human bases on the Moon and Mars received broad media coverage.
HONOLULU, HI, February 13, 2018 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Lin Shen, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
A respected authority in the field of civil engineering, Dr. Shen has been with the University of Hawai'i at Manoa as an Associate Professor since 2017, having previously been an Assistant Professor since 2011. In this position, he focuses on geopolymer and other sustainable concretes, self-consolidating concrete, concrete rheology, testing and modeling concrete physical properties, non-destructive testing, alkali-silica reaction, aggregate packing, characterization of microstructure of cementitious materials, and early age properties of concrete. Early in his career, he served as a senior research engineer with Kal Krishnan Consulting Services, Inc., in Oakland, CA.
Dr. Shen began his career by receiving a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Tongji University in 1999, going on to obtain a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from the National University of Singapore in 2002. He then traveled to the United States to earn a PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2007. He is a Professional Civil Engineer in the state of California, and is a member of the ACI, the ASTM, the ASCE, and Acers. An innovative testing method on self-consolidating concrete originally developed by Dr. Shen has been adopted as a United States National Standard Test (AASHTO PP58-2012). His work on developing "lunar concrete" with the potential to build human bases on the Moon and Mars (https://youtu.be/iPRmBs_6tjU) received broad media coverage including KHON2, Star Advertiser, Hawaii News Now, KITV, among others.
Throughout his career, Dr. Shen has published numerous articles and papers in the area of civil engineering. Some of his most recent works include, "Correlating Aggregate Properties and Concrete Rheology to Dynamic Segregation of Self-Consolidating Concrete" in the ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering and "Testing Dynamic Segregation Test of Self-Consolidating Concrete" in Construction and Building Materials. One of Dr. Shen's articles on dynamic segregation of self-consolidating concrete was featured in Advances in Engineering in May 2016 as a "key scientific article" contributing to excellence in engineering, scientific, and industrial research. In addition, he serves as an associate editor with the ASCE Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering and an editorial board member with Advances in Civil Engineering Materials.
As a researcher, Dr. Shen is especially interested in utilizing new technologies to help Hawai'i achieve self-sustainability, reducing its reliance on outside sources. He endeavors to achieve this goal by developing a new green concrete that uses waste materials such as fly ash, slag and red mud for both the United States and China. In recognition of his commitment to ongoing research, his work on the testing, evaluation and specification of self-consolidating concrete was sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration in 2017. Additionally, he has received the Northrop Grumman Excellence in Teaching Award and Hi Chang Chai Excellence in Teaching Award.
