Supported by 60 years of practiced industry experience, Dr. Friend is a trustee for Eisenhower Fellowships, where he previously served as President. Additionally, he joined the board of directors of the Dialogue Institute's Journal of Ecumenical Studies in 2012, where he remains today. Earlier in his career, he served on the faculty at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He has been a visiting professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies. From 1973 to 1982, Dr. Friend was president of Swarthmore College.

An alumnus of Williams College and Yale University, Dr. Friend holds from them a Bachelor of Arts and a Ph.D., respectively. His professional affiliations include the Council on Foreign Relations, the American Historical Association, the Society of Historians of American Foreign Relations, and the Philadelphia Committee on Foreign Relations. He has been for 30 years a Senior Fellow at Foreign Policy Research Institute. Throughout his career, he has authored a number of books, including "Between Two Empires: The Ordeal of the Philippines," for which he won the Bancroft Prize; "The Blue-Eyed Enemy: Japan against the West in Java and Luzon" and "Woman, Man, and God in Modern Islam," which includes 200 interviews in Indonesia, Pakistan, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. Dr. Friend has been supported in his wok by numerous fellowships and grants, including Fulbright and Rockefeller Fellowships to study in Indonesia and The Philippines.
