Dr. Prokasy, professor emeritus and former vice president of academic affairs at the University of Georgia between 1988 to 1998, had dedicated his entire career to academia. Focusing his career on experimental psychology, he first earned a Bachelor of Arts at Baldwin-Wallace College in 1952, before pursuing a master's degree at Kent State University and serving as a graduate assistant. Graduating in 1954, he was then accepted to the University of Wisconsin where Dr. Prokasy became a W.A.R.F. fellow and teaching assistant, completing a Ph.D. at the university in 1957.
Upon graduation, Dr. Prokasy taught for nearly a decade at Pennsylvania State University before accepting his first appointment at the University of Utah in 1966. Becoming a staple on campus, Dr. Prokasy moved in and out of roles that included professor of psychology, chairman of the psychology department, distinguished research professor, dean of social and behavioral science and acting dean of the Graduate School of Social Work. After 13 years, he had the opportunity to teach at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana as a professor of psychology and dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Eight years later, he moved into his most recent role at the University of Georgia, where he remained until retirement.
Becoming published early in his career, Dr. Prokasy first edited "Classical Conditioning" with A.H. Black in 1965, followed by "Classical Conditioning II" with D. Raskin in 1971. He then edited "Electrodermal Responding in Psychological Research" in 1973, and "Classical Conditioning III" in 1986. Furthermore, Dr. Prokasy spent over a decade as a consultant editor for the "Journal of Experimental Psychology" from 1968 to 1980.
Throughout his career, Dr. Prokasy did consultant work in his field, served on the board of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, was vice president and president of the Athens-Clarke County Library Endowment Board, and was an active member of the Classic Center Cultural Foundation. An elected fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Psychological Association, and member of the Psychonomic Society, the American Society of Higher Education and the Utah Psychological Association, Dr. Prokasy was later honored for his dedication to the field of education with a University of Georgia Alumni Award of Excellence in 1998, a Distinguished Alumni Award from Piedmont College that same year, and an Alumni Merit Award from Baldwin Wallace College in 1992. Notably, Dr. Prokasy was a senior postdoctoral fellow with the National Science Foundation from 1963 and 1964. He has been included in every edition of Who's Who in America since 1987, as well as numerous editions of Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who in the South and Southwest. Married to Pamela Pearson with two children and two step-children, Dr. Prokasy has been retired now for 20 years and enjoys genealogy, reading and photography. He is also a wine connoisseur who recently spent three years as the chairman of the Athens, GA, chapter of the American Wine Society from 2007 to 2010.
